Research Title: Impact of E-Cigarette Use on the Academic Performance of

Grade 11 Students: A Study at Azpetia National High School S.Y 2023-2024

Introduction:

Vapes and e-cigarettes are portable devices that heat a fluid, typically
containing flavoring compounds, humectants, and nicotine, to produce
inhalable emissions. The general public and consumers more frequently refer
to these devices as vapes, pod systems, mods, and tanks, as well as by
brand names like JUUL (Walley, 2019), these devices have gained popularity
among teenagers, raising concerns about potential health risks.
Failure to promptly address these concerns can significantly impact
individuals who use vapes, not only affecting their health but also their
academic performance. Since 2015, e-cigarette use has been steadily
increasing in various Southeast Asian countries. According to data from the
Global Youth Tobacco Survey, 14.1% of Filipino teenagers currently use e-
cigarettes (Tchounwou, 2023).

Despite the enactment of Republic Act No. 11900, which aims to prohibit the
sale, advertising, and product demonstration of Vaporized Nicotine and Non-
Nicotine Products or Novel Tobacco Products within a 100-meter radius of
playgrounds, schools, or other establishments frequently visited by minors,
reports indicate that some Grade 11 students at Azpetia National High
School, a secondary institution in Agusan Del Sur, continue to use vape
products. This activity undermines the intent of the law, which seeks to
promote the overall well-being of students.

Given this scenario, the researchers have undertaken this study to address
the rampant vaping among Grade 11 students at Azpetia National High
School, aiming to cultivate healthier and more academically focused
students. By doing so, the study aims to counteract the increasing trend of E-
Cigarette use among teenagers in the school, as well as to address its impact
on the academic performance of students, ultimately contributing to a safer
and more adequate learning environment.

Researches has been conducted on how using e-cigarettes affects the

performance of teenagers. However, there is limited research on the impact
of vaping on the academic performance of senior high school students in the
Philippines. This study aims to fill this gap by examining how using e-
cigarettes relates to success among Grade 11 students at Azpetia National
High School. By uncovering this link, the study can provide insights for school
policies and initiatives that support both achievement and student well-
being.

Impact of E-Cigarette Use on the Academic Performance of Grade 11

Vape and e-cigarettes are portable devices that heat a fluid that usually
contains flavoring compounds, a humectant, and nicotine to produce
emissions for inhalation. The general public and consumers more frequently
refer to these devices as vapes, pod systems, mods, and tanks, as well as by
brand names like JUUL (Walley, 2019). E-cigarettes have become increasingly
popular among teenagers in recent times, prompting concerns about
potential health hazards.

In fact, later (after 2015), e-cigarette use has been gradually expanding in
various Southeast Asian countries. According to reports, the percentage of
teenagers in Malaysia using e-cigarettes jumped from 1.2% to 9.8%, a rise of
more than 700%. Based on data from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey, 3.3%
of teenagers in Thailand and 14.1% of teenagers in the Philippines presently
use e-cigarettes (Tchounwou, 2023).

Furthermore, even after Republic Act No. 11900 was ratified, which aims to
forbid the selling, advertising, and product demonstration of Vaporized
Nicotine and Non-Nicotine Products or Novel Tobacco Products within a
hundred (100) meters of any point on the perimeter of a playground, school,
or other establishment that is frequently visited by minors, reports indicate
that some Grade 11 students in Azpetia National High School, a secondary
institution in Agusan Del Sur, continue to use vape products. This activity
undermines the intent of the law, which seeks to promote the overall well-
