Unit 4th class tasked to demonstrate the disassembling and assembling of 5.56mm M16A1.
Before anything else, the history of 5.56mm M16A1 begins with Eugene Stuner known as the legendary
designer of military rifle. In 1955, Stuner worked for the armalite division in where he designed the M14 first. In
1958, the armalite produce a new version of armalite 10 which is the armalite 15 or the M16 chambered 223
caliber 5.56mm cartridge. It was developed due to the general dissatisfaction of the M14. It was first used and
deployed in the jungle warfare at the Vietnam War. In 1969, the 5.56 mm M16A1 became a US standard
military rifle until in the present time.
So, before we proceed to the characteristics of 5.56mm M16A1, let us know first the cardinal rules for
gun safety. First, always treat your gun as a loaded one. Second, always trigger finger out unless you are
ready to shot. Third, be sure on your target and the things behind it. Lastly, do not point your gun on the things
that you are not intended to shot.
The 5.56mm M16AI has 6 characteristics. These are the light weapon, the shoulder weapon, gas
operated, air cooled, magazine fed, and the selector level which compose of three types: the safe mode, semi
and automatic.
And as the general data, the length of a rifle from flash suppressor down to the rubber recoil pad is
39inches, without flash suppressor down to the rubber recoil pad is 38inches. From flash suppressor down to
the barrel is 21inches, without flash suppressor down to the barrel is 20inches. The weight of a rifle with
magazine and sling is 7.91pounds, without magazine and sling is 6.51pounds, with 20 rounds magazine is
7.51pounds. And in operational, the cyclic rate of fire is 700-800 rounds per minute. The maximum rate of fire
in semi is 45-65 rounds per minute in automatic is 150-200 rounds per minute. The sustained rate of fire is 10-
15 rounds per minute, the maximum rate is 2,653 meters and the maximum effective range is 460 meters.
Ladies and gentleman, the 5.56mm M16A1 has 2 major groups, the upper receiver group and the lower
receiver group. In upper receiver group, it has the flash suppressor, the barrel, the bayonet stud, the front
sight, the upper sling swivel, the hand guard, the slip ring, the carrying handle, the charging handle together
with the charging handle lock, the dusk cover, the forward assist assemble, the rear sight adjustment and the
rear sight. In lower receiver group, it has the magazine wheel, the magazine release button, the bolt catch, the
selector level which compose of 3 types the safe mode, semi, and automatic. We also have the trigger guard,
the trigger, the hand grip, the butt or the compartment, the lower sling swivel and the rubber recoil pad.
We are done naming the parts so let's proceed in disassembling the weapon. In disassembling any
weapon, we must check first if there’s ammunition left inside the chamber or clear the weapon To check, cock
the charging handle twice and put the selector level into semi. Point It to the ground then pull the trigger. Other
way in checking is, cock the charging handle twice then point if upward then pull the trigger. Cock the charging
handle twice again then put the selector level into safe mode. The rifle is cleared and ready to disassemble.
In disassembling, put the rife in the flat surface. Press the pivot and takedown pin simultaneously and
pull it on the other side. Separate the 2 major groups, the upper receiver group and the lower receiver group.
So, we are going to disassemble first the upper receiver group. Pull the charging handle slowly then remove
the bolt carrier assembly followed by the charging handle. The bolt carrier assembly has its own internal parts.
To disassemble this, we are going to remove first the retaining pin, followed by the firing pin. Rotate the bolt
cam pin in ¼ turn and lift it. Then remove the bolt inside the bolt carrier assembly. We are done in upper
receiver group, so let's proceed in lower receiver group. Press in the buffer depress buffer retainer then
separate the buffer spring guide and the buffer spring.
We are done disassembling the weapon. Again, the internal parts of 5.56mm M16A1 are the charging
handle together with the charging handle lock, the retaining pin, the firing pin, the bolt cam pin, the bolt and the
bolt carrier. In lower receiver group, it has the buffer spring and the buffer spring guide.
We are done naming the internal parts, now let's proceed in assembling the weapon. But before that,
ladies and gentlemen please take note that the first one to be removed is the last one to be returned. So we
are going to assemble first the lower receiver group. Put the buffer spring inside the hole followed by the buffer
spring guide then push it deeply until it locks. In upper receiver group, put the bolt inside the bolt carrier follow
by the bolt cam pin, put the firing pin inside the bolt carrier and be sure that the firing pin will not fall into the
ground, followed by the retaining pin. Put the charging handle inside the chamber of upper receiver followed by
the bolt carrier assembly then push it deeply until the charging handle lock. Then combine the two major group,
press the pivot and takedown pin.
We are done assembling the weapon and now let's check if it is properly assembled. To check, cock
the charging handle twice then put the selector level into semi. Point it to the ground them pull the trigger.
Other way in checking is, cock the charging handle twice then point it upward then pull the trigger. Cock the
charging handle twice again then put the selector level into safe mode. The rifle is cleared and properly
assembled.
Ladies and gentleman the 5.56mm MI6A1 has 8 cycles of operation: the firing, unlocking, extracting,
ejecting, feeding, chambering, locking and cocking.
Please be reminded that only trained and expert are authorized to dissemble and assemble this
weapon.
In the past few minutes, we discussed the history of 5.56mm M16A1, the cardinal rules for gun safety,
the characteristics, the general data, the parts of 5.56mm M16A1, how to disassemble and assemble this
weapon and lastly the 8 cycles of operation.
Now, do you have any clarification or verification regarding on disassembling and assembling of
5.56mm MI6A1? If none, that ends my presentation. Again, I ‘am Cadet ____________ SICC
ROTC unit 4th class at your service. Good day everyone!
