Help Facility

Page Formatting and Setup
• Is the decision on the appearance of page(s)
in a document to look like ,such as-:
– How big are the margins?
– What size paper are we going to use?
– Which page orientation should we use?
– Do we want page numbers? Which format?
– Should some special text appear at the top
or bottom of every page?

Page Formatting and Setup ...
• To format the different properties of a page, use the
Format Menu | Page ; to get the Page Style dialog
box and then go to the Page tab.
• The following properties of a page can be modified:
– Paper Format And Size
– Page Orientation
– Page Margins
– Page Number Format
– Page Borders
– Columns

Formatting page - Paper format
(size)
• Paper format is the type of the paper to be
used when printing the document.
• Each paper format is having its standard size
for width and height measured in
inches/centimeters.
• Select a predefined paper size or create a
user custom format by entering the
dimensions for the paper in the Height and
Width text boxes.

Formatting page - Orientation
• Two types of page orientations are
Portrait and Landscape.
• Portrait: the page’s height is longer than
its width.
• Landscape: the page’s height is shorter
than its width.

Formatting page - Margins
• Margin is an area of the page without text, which is
measured between the edges of the page and the text
boundary/area, We can define four types of margins.
– Left: The amount of space to leave between the
left edge of the page and the text area.
– Right : The amount of space to leave between the
right edge of the page and the text area.
– Top: The amount of space to leave between the
upper edge of the page and the text area
Bottom: The amount of space to leave between the
lower edge of the page and the text area.

Formatting page - Numbers
• A page number may appear anywhere on a page, but
it is recommended to put page numbers in the footer
or header.
• The format in which it appears is defined by the
Format drop down list in the Layout settings of the
Page tab.
• To insert the number of the current page use Insert
Menu |Fields | Page Number
• A page number alignment can be changed using
toolbar/ paragraph dialog box.

Formatting Paragraph - Header and
Footer
• Headers and footers are areas in the top and the
bottom page margins in which you can add text
,fields or graphics.
• Headers and footers are added to the current
page style. Any page that uses the same style
automatically receives the header or footer that
you add.
• They are inserted into the document by using:
Insert | Header | Default (page style)
Insert | Footer |Default (page style)

• The information can be:
– Page numbers.
– The document title.
– The organization from which the document
comes.
– The date etc.
• These information can be added by typing in
or inserted using fields.

Formatting page - borders
• Setting borders and their preferences.
• People prefer to put borders on first pages of
documents.

Formatting Paragraph
• Modifies the format and properties of the
current paragraph, such as indents and spacing
, alignment, etc
• We are going to use paragraph dialog box to
format a paragraph.
• To open paragraph dialog box use
Format  Paragraph OR Use paragraph
formatting icon in the formatting tool bar.

Formatting Paragraph- Indent
Specify the amount of space to leave between the left
and the right page margins and the paragraph.
• Before text: How much space between the left text
boundary and the left edge of the text?
• After text: How much space between the right text
boundary and the right hand edge of the text? The
right hand edge of the text is the last visible letter on
the line.
• First line: Is the first line to be any different?(hanging
or indented?)

Formatting Paragraph - Spacing
• Spacing: Specify the amount of space to leave
between selected paragraphs.
i. Above paragraph: define the amount of
space to leave above the selected
paragraph(s).
ii. Below paragraph: define the amount of space
to leave below the selected paragraph(s).
• Line spacing: specify the amount of space to leave
between lines of text in a paragraph The most
common choices are Single,1.5 lines, Double

Formatting Paragraph - Alignment
• Sets the alignment of the paragraph relative to the margin of
page.
– Left: Aligns the paragraph to the left page margin.
– Right: Aligns the paragraph to the right page margin.
– Centered: Centers the contents of the paragraph on the
page
– Justify: Aligns the paragraph to the left and to the right
page margins.
• Last Line: Specify the alignment for the last line in the
paragraph.
• Expand single word: If the last line of a justified
paragraph consists of one word, the word is stretched to

the width of the paragraph.

Formatting Paragraph - Drop Caps
• Formats the first letter of a paragraph with a
large Capital letter, that can span several lines.

Formatting Paragraph - Borders
• Place the cursor in the paragraph for which you want
to define a border.
• Choose Format - Paragraph - Borders.
• Select one of the default border line arrangement
(styles) in the Default area.
• Select a line style and color for the selected border
style in the Line area.
• Select the distance between the border lines and the
paragraph contents in the Spacing to contents area.
• Click OK to apply the changes.

Formatting Paragraph - Tabs
• Used to Set the position of a tab stop in a paragraph.
• You can use paragraph dialog box or the ruler to set
the tab positions.
• Position: Select a tab stop type, enter a new
measurement, and then click New. If you want ,you
can also specify the measurement units to
• Use for the tab (cm for centimeter, or " for inches).
• Type: Select the type of tab stop that you want to
modify

Formatting Paragraph - Tabs ...
Types
• Left: Aligns the left edge of the text to the tab stop
and extends the text to the right.
• Right: Aligns the right edge of the text to the tab stop
and extends the text to the left of the tab stop.
• Center: . Aligns the center of the text to the tab
• Decimal: Aligns the decimal point of a number to the
center of the tab stop and text to the left of the tab.

Formatting Paragraph - Headings
and Subheadings
• These allow you to have consistent headings
in your text which may be numbered from
• Heading1, Heading2, Heading3,..Heading10
• To get the different headings use the Style
drop down box at the left end of the
formatting tool bar .
• Or use Format Menu | Style and Formatting
• Then Select a Paragraph style to apply.

Formatting Paragraph - Changing
Case
• The case of existing/typed text can easily be
modified without deleting it and typing again
with desired/different case.
• To change case, highlight the text then use
Format menu | change case| then Click on
required option.
• Option Possible cases are: Sentence case,
lowercase ,UPPERCASE ,Capitalize Every Word
and tOGGLE cASE.

Manual Breaks
• Used to inserts a manual line break, column break or a page
break at the current cursor position.
i. Line Break: moves the text found to the right of the cursor
to the next line, without creating a new paragraph, (Insert |
Manual Break | Line break)
– OR You can also insert a line break by pressing Shift + Enter.
ii. Column Break: in a multiple column layout moves the text
found to the right of the cursor to the beginning of the next
column.
iii. Page Break: moves the text found to the right of the cursor
to the beginning of the next page.

Help in Libre Office
• Use the Help menu to get more information
about how to use the operating system or the
application, Use the F1 key from your
keyboard to get help menu.
• Click on Help action button in a dialog box to
get help related to that dialog boxes
immediately .
• Each will give the LibreOffice.org Help dialog
box

Help in Libre Office…..
• Contents tab will let you look through the
topics available
• Index tab is an alphabetical list of all topics.
Start to type a topic name and you will be
taken to the closest name in the list.
• Find tab lets you search Type in search text in
a similar way to web browsing.

Help in the Operating System
• Use F1 on the desktop
• In Windows use Start | Help and Support
• In EdUbuntu use the Help Button which is the
? on the launch bar (or panel)
