COURSE SYLLABUS

Course Description:
This course is designed to introduce young learners to the basics of phonics, focusing on understanding
letter sounds, recognizing and writing letters, and developing vocabulary through fun activities, stories,
and games. The program covers all 26 letters of the English alphabet, offering engaging lessons for each
letter with practical examples, pictures, and simple words. Over the course of three months, students will
explore the sounds and shapes of letters, associate them with words, and build their early reading and
writing skills.
The course progresses through eight units, each targeting a group of letters with engaging lessons that
encourage creativity and understanding. Interactive reviews, songs, and games are incorporated to ensure
that the students not only learn the material but also enjoy the learning process
Course Objectives:
By the end of the course, students will:
1. Recognize and pronounce all 26 letters of the English alphabet.
2. Identify and understand letter sounds through visual and auditory practice.
3. Form basic words using the letters and their corresponding sounds (e.g., apple, cat, dog, etc.).
4. Write letters correctly in both upper and lower case with proper strokes.
5. Expand vocabulary by associating letters with familiar objects and animals.
6. Understand simple phonetic patterns and blend sounds to read basic words.
7. Participate in interactive reviews to reinforce letter recognition and phonics knowledge.
8. Engage in enjoyable songs and games to strengthen understanding of phonics concepts in a
playful and motivating manner.
9. Demonstrate basic sentence formation using words learned throughout the course.

Week 1 – 3: Unit 1 & Unit 2


• Focus: Learn letters Aa, Bb, Cc, Dd, Ee, and Ff.
• Topics:
o Unit 1: Aa (apple, ant, etc.), Bb (bear, bird, etc.), Cc (cat, cup, etc.)
o Unit 2: Dd (dog, desk, etc.), Ee (egg, elephant, etc.), Ff (fish, fork, etc.)
• Activities: Flashcards, matching games, pronunciation practice.
• Assessment
o Written Test ( Unit 1 & 2)
o Project 1 (Week 3): Create a Mini Alphabet Book (2-3 pages)
o Instructions:
§ Create a mini book with 2-3 pages. Each page should represent one letter (Aa,
Bb, Cc, Dd, Ee, Ff).
§ On each page, draw or paste a picture of an object that starts with the letter (e.g.,
apple for Aa, bear for Bb).
§ Write the word under the picture.
§ Make the book colorful and fun! You can use markers, crayons, or colored
pencils to decorate.
§ Optional: If possible, bind the pages together using staples, string, or simply keep
them in order.

Week 4 – 6: Unit 3 & Unit 4


• Focus: Learn letters Gg, Hh, Ii, Jj, Kk, Ll.
• Topics:
o Unit 3: Gg (gorilla, goat, etc.), Hh (horse, house, etc.), Ii (insect, igloo, etc.)
o Unit 4: Jj (jet, jam, etc.), Kk (kangaroo, key, etc.), Ll (lion, lamp, etc.)
• Activities: Letter writing practice, vocabulary games, and song-learning.
• Assessment
o Written Test ( Unit 3 & 4)
o Mid-term
o Project 2 (Week 6): Design a Letter Collage Poster
o Instructions:
§ Choose at least one picture for each letter you learned (Gg, Hh, Ii, Jj, Kk, Ll).
§ Find pictures from magazines, newspapers, or print them from the internet. You
can also draw the pictures if you prefer.
§ Arrange and glue the pictures on a poster board or large piece of paper.
§ Write the corresponding word next to the picture (e.g., gorilla for Gg, horse for
Hh).
§ Add decorations, borders, or any other creative elements to make your poster
visually appealing.
§ Present the collage to the class or group.

Week 7 – 9: Unit 5 & Unit 6


• Focus: Learn letters Mm, Nn, Oo, Pp, Qq, Rr.
• Topics:
o Unit 5: Mm (monkey, milk, etc.), Nn (nut, net, etc.), Oo (octopus, ox, etc.)
o Unit 6: Pp (peach, pen, etc.), Qq (queen, quiz, etc.), Rr (rabbit, rose, etc.)
• Activities: Story creation using vocabulary from units.
• Assessment
o Written Test ( Unit 5 & 6)
o Project 3 (Week 9): Create a Flashcard Set
o Instructions:
§ Create flashcards for each of the words learned in Units 5 and 6 (e.g., monkey,
nut, peach, queen, etc.).
§ On each flashcard, draw or paste a picture of the object and write the
corresponding word underneath.
§ You can use index cards, or cut pieces of paper into equal-sized rectangles.
§ Once all flashcards are made, you can use them to practice spelling and memory
games with a partner or in small groups.

Week 10 – 12: Unit 7 & Unit 8


• Focus: Learn letters Ss, Tt, Uu, Vv, Ww, Xx, Yy, Zz.
• Topics:
o Unit 7: Ss (seal, sun, etc.), Tt (turtle, tent, etc.), Uu (umbrella, up, etc.), Vv (van, violin,
etc.)
o Unit 8: Ww (wolf, web, etc.), Xx (fox, box, etc.), Yy (yak, yo-yo, etc.), Zz (zebra, zipper,
etc.)
• Activities: Create a vocabulary list with drawings, interactive games, and songs.
• Assessment
o Wrtten Test ( Unit 7& 8)
o Final Test
o Project 4 (Week 12): Design a "World Map of Letters"
o Instructions:
§ Create a large, colorful map or poster that includes animals or objects from each
of the letters learned (e.g., zebra for Zz, fox for Xx, wolf for Ww).
§ Each item should be placed under the letter it corresponds to (e.g., Zz for zebra,
Xx for fox).
§ You can draw the animals, use magazine cutouts, or print images from the
internet.
§ Create labels with the words next to each image.
§ Optional: Add a "legend" or key to explain what each picture represents.
§ After completing the map, practice saying the names of the animals or objects in
front of your classmates.
