Assignment Brief and Guidance:
Vocational scenario:
You are working as part of a management team in a medium-sized organisation. Under new
ownership, there are ambitious plans for extensive growth over the next 3-5 years. You are
anticipating this period of change to be extremely challenging within the current uncertain political
climate.
Similarly, with developing changes in technology, social responsibility and environmental concerns
you are unsure of your ability to manage and lead your organisation throughout this period of
change. You have decided to prepare for this period of change by researching what the drivers of
change are and how change can be managed.
Report Section A: Responding to Change
Research 3 real-life cases of organisational change in various industries (e.g., technology,
healthcare, retail) and provide a brief overview of three chosen organisations.
Explain what changes occurred within these organisations (e.g., restructuring, adopting
new technologies, mergers etc) and what were the drivers of change (you may wish to
review external (PESTLE) and internal (SWOT) factors to identify the drivers of change in
three organisations.
Analyse the nature of change, compare the types of change and discuss how these
changes affected their day-to-day operations, productivity, and overall success of the
chosen businesses.
Compare how each of the organisations has responded to the drivers for change,
considering similarities and differences in each organisation’s approach to dealing with the
change.
Report Section B: The Impact of Change:
Analyse the ways in which the internal and external drivers of change may affect the
leadership behaviour and the behaviour of the teams and individuals. You should use
examples to support your answer.
Once you have considered the potential impacts of change you must evaluate measures
that can be taken to minimise the negative impacts of change on organisational behaviour
(i.e. the behaviour of the teams and individuals)
You should aim to apply appropriate theories and models in order to critically evaluate the
long-term implications of internal and external drivers of change within an organisation.
Provide recommendations for minimising the effects (impact) of change through effective
planning and managing change, including change impact analysis.
Following your research, you plan to prepare a presentation to share with your colleagues in order
to support the wider management team.
Presentation: Using Change to influence leadership style and decision making
Select one of your organisations from the report and produce a force field analysis that
identifies the driving and resisting forces associated with change.
You are then required to explain the different barriers to change and how they influence
leadership decision-making within your selected organisation.
Analyse how was change accomplished and how successful was it?
Use of force field analysis to make valid recommendations for meeting the organisation’s
objectives.
Choose and apply different leadership approaches to dealing with change in three
organisational contexts. Analyse the use of leadership approaches and models for given
situations.
Critically evaluate the effectiveness of a minimum of 3 leadership approaches and discuss
to what extent leadership approaches can deliver organisational change effectively. You
should apply a range of appropriate models and frameworks to support your answer to this
task.
