Part 2: Chunking
Practice reading the following sentences by dividing them into meaningful chunks. Indicate
the chunks using slashes (/).
1. Despite the heavy rain, / the event went on as scheduled, / much to everyone's surprise.
3. She decided to take a break / from work / to travel around Europe / and explore different
cultures.
Part 3: Pausing
Read the following paragraph out loud. Practice pausing appropriately at commas, periods,
and other punctuation marks.
During the summer holidays, many families enjoy spending time outdoors. They go
camping, hiking, or simply relax at the beach. It's a great time to unwind and create
memories. However, it's important to prepare adequately for these trips. Packing the right
gear, planning the route, and staying informed about the weather can make all the
difference.
Instructions:
1. Sound Segments: Use a dictionary or an online phonetic tool to check the phonetic
transcriptions if needed.
2. Chunking: Practice reading the sentences multiple times, paying attention to natural
pauses and intonation.
3. Pausing: Record yourself reading the paragraph and listen to the playback to identify
areas for improvement.
Submission:
Submit the written phonetic transcriptions.
Record and submit audio files for the chunking and pausing exercises.
