Experiment: 1
Problem: To study the Muller Lyer illusion by the method of average error.
Hypothesis: 1 Illusion provides useful hints about perceptual process.
Hypothesis: 2 Illusion required an understanding of how we transform sensation into
meaningful perception
Introduction:
This experiment is based on these terms:
Perception: it is the process by which brain integrates organizes and interpret sensory
impression to create representation of the world.
Illusion: perception that does not correspond with actual stimuli. In 1889 Franz Muller lyer
conducted this experiment.
1. Visual illusion
2. Inllusion of form
3. Illusion of size
4. Illusion of distance
5. Illusion of movement.
Muller Lyer illusion:
An illusion in which the perceive length of a line is altered by the position of other line that
encloses it.
Apparatus:
Muller Lyer cards
Paper, pencil and scale.
Methodology:
Name of the subject……………
Date:
Name of the experimenter:
Instruction:
Relax your subject and let him/her sit comfortably than start the experiment and describe the
whole experiment. Give instructions to subject starts the experiment by moving the variable line
inside and outside, until the two line appear at equal length.

Procedure: using the variable Muller Lyer cards by giving the subject to let him to judge the
length of the fixed (standard line) by moving the variable line in and out , until both the two lines
appear to equal length . The experiment has to measure the length of the variable line after each
determination to ascertain the subject of the measure until after completion of the experiment.

Discussion:
Conclusion: our hypothesis has been proved that the illusion provides useful hints about
perceptual process.
