FOREWORD
Usually ‘technology’ means application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes,
such as development of machinery and equipment and application of scientific knowledge to
make different operations easier and more convenient. Though it is a branch of knowledge
dealing with engineering or applied sciences there are a host of technologies in different
fields that are considered significant. Owing to rapid multi-dimensional progress of
technology, it is taking over every area and is associated with different fields of knowledge
and areas of operation such as, Agriculture, Architecture, Business and Finance, Construction,
Education, Entertainment, Crime Detection, Hospitality Management, Information Collection
and Communication, Medicine, Games and Sports, Printing etc. Technology assumes a core
part of our day-to-day lives. It is all-pervading.
People are not satisfied with what they have. Thirst of human beings to invent new
things is insatiable. Efforts are being made on a continuous basis to invent new things or new
methods of doing things so as to improve quality, to reduce cost, to capture new markets and
to win over the competitors. Research is a process of systematic inquiry. It takes place on a
continuous basis either to improve upon the existing things and/or to find out the new things.
Research improves services and treatments not just for the present generation but also for
future generations.
Inventions and innovations are the results of research. As a result new technologies
emerge. When given a fair trial, new technologies may or may not prove themselves
successful. Those technologies which are successful replace the existing ones thus making
existing technologies obsolete. Those new technologies which make the existing technologies
obsolete and replace them are called disruptive technologies. In recent times lot of changes
have come in different sectors of the economy as a result old technologies have been replaced
by new ones. Obsolete or outdated technology is no longer used. A technology often becomes
obsolete when replaced by a new or better technology. Advanced technologies supersede
original product manufacturer capabilities.
Innovation is the process of turning a new concept into commercial success or
widespread use. Invention is the creation of a new idea or concept. Creativity is the act of
turning new and imaginative ideas into reality. Disruptive technology is an innovation that
significantly alters the way that consumers, industries, or businesses operate. A disruptive
technology sweeps away and replaces the systems or habits because it has attributes that are
recognizably superior. With technology the world changes and the quality of life improves.
Digitalization has swept the world in recent times. Every field of knowledge and a
majority of activities have got affected by digitalization. Business, Banking and Finance,
Education, Communication, whatnot every sector of the economy has got affected by
digitalization. Financial transactions have become easy, faster and trust worthy because of
digitalization. Digital currency, online business, online teaching, work from home concept etc.
have become common. Digitalisation has made possible paperless, cost-effective, contact less,
round-the-clock/ 24/7 business possible. New ways of doing business, new ways of running
an office and new methods of teaching and evaluation have become popular. Data mining,
analysis and interpretation has become easy.
Under these circumstances Dr. Ranganath has rightly conceived the idea of conducting a
seminar on digital and disruptive technologies. The ICSSR has kindly considered his
proposal, provided him with necessary funds and facilitated him to provide a common
platform to tech-savvy faculty members, research scholars and the students to discuss various
issues involved, to arrive at the right conclusions and to make appropriate recommendations
on the issues concerned. I wish him all the success in his endeavor.
