INTRODUCTION
 Protected cultivation is the technique of
providing favorable environment or growth
conditions to the plants.
 High value vegetable crops like tomato, cherry
tomato, coloured capsicum, parthenocarpic
cucumber, cucumber, brinjal, etc.

EUROPEAN CUCUMBER
 Scientific name: Cucumis sativus
 Variety: Emir Star
 Sex form: Gynoecious vegetative parthenocarpy
 Number of polyhouses: 2
 Polyhouse total area: 500m2
 Total cultivated area: 450m2
 Total number of beds: 22
FIELD PREPARATION
 Polyhouse was cleaned and weeds removed.
 Sheep manure and basal application of fertilizer
were added to the field.
 Beds were prepared.
 The dimensions of the beds were:
 Bed length: 15m
 Bed width: 90cm
 Bed height: 20cm
 Path width: 50cm

SOWING
 Variety: Emir Star (gynoecious)
 Sowing was taken in 2 rows per bed in zig-zag
pattern.
 1st polyhouse: 05/10/24
 2nd polyhouse: 04/11/24
 Seed rate: 500 seeds/polyhouse
 Germination: 5-6 days after sowing
 Germination: 90%
 Spacing: 45x45cm
 Cotyledon leaves were removed at 3-4 leaves
stage.

INTERCULTURAL OPERATIONS
 Irrigation
 Staking
 Removal of laterals
 Weeding
 Fertilizer application

IRRIGATION
 Two laterals were laid per bed(16mm).
 Irrigated daily for 10 minutes.
 Number of litres per irrigation: 400litres.

REMOVAL OF LATERALS
 Laterals were removed in order to ensure
uniform growth.
 Removing of laterals also prevents the diversion
of nutrients and thereby, enhancing fruit set as
well as quality.

WEEDING
 Hand weeding was done twice in every 15 days.
 Weeding is necessary to reduce competition
among the crop plants and also to minimize
disease spread.

FERTILIZER APPLICATION
 Most of the fertilizers were provided to the
plants through fertigation.
 The fertilizers provided were:
 UREA: It is the source of nitrogen. Hence, was
given to increase vegetative growth.
 SSP: It is the source of phosphorous, which
enhances root development and flowering.
 MOP: It is the source of Potassium, which
enhances the quality of produce.
 19 all: It provides NPK in the ratio 19:19:19.
 MAP(12:61:0) and KNO3(13:0:45) were also
given to meet the fertilizer requirement of
plant.
 Combi-2 micronutrient: It is the source of
micronutrients like Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn, B, etc.

DISEASE CONTROL
 Diseases encountered under polyhouse
condition were:
1.Downy Mildew
2.Powdery Mildew
3.Root Knot Nematode

1. DOWNY MILDEW: Caused by Pseudoperonospora

cubensis.
Control: Removal of infected leaves.
 Drenching with Trichoderma asperellum @
10g/l.
 Spraying of EQUATION PRO (famaxadone 16.6%
+ Cymoxanil 22.1% SC) systemic fungicide @
1ml/l.
 Spraying of RIDOMIL GOLD 68% WP (Metalaxyl
4% + Mancozeb 64%) systemic fungicide @ 2g/l.
 Spraying of INFINITO (Flupicolide +
Propamocarb Hydro chloride) systemic
fungicide @0.5ml/l.

2. POWDERY MILDEW: Caused by Erysiphe

chicoracearum and Podosphaera xanthii
Control: Removal of infected leaves.
 Spraying of CONTAF 5% SC (formulation of
Hexaconazole) systemic fungicide @ 2ml/l.
 Spraying of NATIVO (Tebuconazole 50% +
Trifloxystrobin 25%) systemic broad spectrum
fungicide @2g/l.
3. ROOT-KNOT NEMATODE: Caused by Meloidogyne
spp.
Control: Removal & uprooting of infected plants.
 Drenching with Paecilomyces lilacinus @10g/l.

PEST CONTROL
Pests encountered under polyhouse conditions
were:
1. Sucking pests(Aphids, Thrips)
2.Fruit borer
Control: Spraying of Emamectin benzoate 5% SG
@ 1g/l.

 First fruit set: Observed on 15th November (6-12
DAF)

HARVESTING AND YIELD

 First harvesting was observed on 24th
November.
 Number of harvests:
 1st polyhouse- 28
 2nd polyhouse- 10
 Total number of harvests= 38
