                                           Part 1: Interview
A. Interview Information
Interviewee’s name and job title: Christine Wilson; School Counselor
Interviewee’s organization: Lebanon Trail High School
Date and time of Interview: Friday, October 20, 2023, at 5 pm CST
A1.a Identify specific mental health issues.
The interviewee stated that several kinds of mental health issues do exist in the high school
community, including mental disorders such as depression and anxiety, substance abuse, and youth
suicide prevention. The number of students suffering from depression and anxiety rose during and after
the COVID-19 pandemic, but it has gone down since 2023. Substance abuse, mainly alcohol and
marijuana, however, is not common in the community which is deemed to be attributed to Texas’ strict
laws against marijuana possession. The rate of suicides for children ages 15-19 has been rising in recently
three years. One of the members of the school basketball team committed suicide the other day.
Therefore, youth suicide prevention is a prime of our daily work.
A1.b Identify specific school-based resources and how meet needs.
A school-based case management and mental health counseling service has been provided to all
students at Lebanon Trail High School. School counselors work together in a comprehensive school
counseling program for the entire campus through private one-to-one chatting, classroom meetings, and
advisory lessons. Plenty of online psychology courses can be conveniently accessed via students’
Chromebooks. Regarding a specific psychological intervention case, if a student shows signs of suicidal
intention, case management will be performed with advanced computer technologies to guarantee
efficiency and privacy. Nearby Children’s Medical Center provides instant treatment if needed. Besides,
several sensory rooms are assessable to any student to take a break if necessary. School Counselors offer
general counseling and referrals to substance abuse treatment agencies in the community to students with
alcohol or other drug-related problems.
