Vector Calculus Assignment 2 Solutions

General Instructions
The following document contains the solutions to the questions for Assignment 2. Please
note that the solutions provided may not be the only possible way to solve the questions.
They indicate only one of the many (possibly) valid solutions. The solutions provided are
relatively crisp and do not include all the steps that you must have. Your solution should be
logical and contain all supporting arguments. Feel free to contact any of the TAs via email in
case of any discrepancy you find in the solutions provided.

Question 1
Note: The convention for the symbol used to represent the angle from the z-axis varies. The
solutions here use the convention used in class.

In the cylindrical coordinate system, a point is represented in terms of r, θ, and z. Consider a


point in the cartesian system, P (x, y, z). Equivalently, in the cylindrical system:

x = r cos θ

y = r sin θ,

z = z

We need to find the projection P of a point P (x, y, z), on the plane x = 0. Therefore, we

have:

r cos θ = 0

⟹ cos θ = 0

⟹ θ = ±90°

However, r is radial distance and must be positive. Since y = r sin θ, if y is positive, and we
consider θ = −90°, then r will turn out to be negative, which is a contradiction. Similarly, if y
is negative, and we consider θ = 90°, then r will turn out to be negative. Hence, we must
consider both cases. Thus the projection of the point will be:

where:

θ = 90° if y ≥ 0

constraint that you need to impose in order to convert the given plane to a line.

For example, consider the case: ϕ = 90°; this fixes the plane as the xy plane on varying θ and
r freely. This gives the family of lines lying on the xy plane.
