DEPARTMENT OF URBAN PLANNING AND ARCHITECTURE
COARSE NAME: Basic of Architecture I
Assignment 1
Create harmonies and functional urban space plan based the organization technique and
principles. Follow the steps we discussed in practice class. Read the following to get more
information.
Designing an urban space that seamlessly integrates various functions requires a thoughtful
approach to spatial organization, user experience, and sustainability. Below is a conceptual plan
that incorporates the specified elements:
1. Open Space - Gathering Area
At the heart of the site, establish a spacious plaza that serves as a central gathering point for
community events, markets, and social interactions. This area should be flexible to accommodate
various activities and be easily accessible from different parts of the site.
2. Sitting Areas
Distribute comfortable seating throughout the site, including benches along pathways, shaded
seating under trees, and informal seating like low walls or steps around the plaza. This
encourages rest and socialization at various points within the space.
3. Greenery and Walkways
Integrate lush greenery with a network of walkways that connect different areas of the site. Use
native plant species to promote biodiversity and sustainability. Curved paths can create a sense
of discovery, while straight paths can provide direct routes between key areas.
4. Main Roads and Secondary Roads
Design main roads to facilitate efficient vehicular traffic around the perimeter of the site,
minimizing disruption to pedestrian areas. Secondary roads can provide access to internal areas,
with traffic-calming measures to ensure pedestrian safety.
5. Roadside Walkways
Along all roads, provide wide, well-lit sidewalks with trees and planting strips to buffer
pedestrians from vehicular traffic. Include amenities like bike racks and seating to enhance
usability.
6. Playgrounds for Children
Allocate safe, accessible areas for children's playgrounds, equipped with age-appropriate play
structures, soft surfaces, and seating for caregivers. Position these near residential zones or
community facilities for convenience.
7. Parks
Develop parks that offer a mix of open lawns, wooded areas, and water features. These spaces
can provide opportunities for recreation, relaxation, and connection with nature. Incorporate
walking trails, picnic areas, and fitness stations to cater to diverse user needs.
8. Plaza
In addition to the central gathering area, consider smaller plazas or courtyards throughout the
site. These can serve as intimate spaces for art installations, performances, or outdoor dining.
9. Surrounding Buildings and Corridor Shops
Design surrounding buildings to reflect local architectural typologies, creating a cohesive
aesthetic. Incorporate ground-level retail spaces with corridor shops to activate street life and
provide amenities to users. Upper floors can house offices or residences, promoting a mixed-use
environment.
10. Additional Considerations
Sustainability: Implement green roofs, rain gardens, and solar lighting to enhance environmental
performance.
Accessibility: Ensure all areas are accessible to individuals with disabilities, with ramps, tactile
paving, and clear signage.
Safety: Incorporate adequate lighting, clear sightlines, and emergency call stations to promote
safety.
Case Studies for Inspiration
Superkilen Park, Copenhagen: This park integrates elements from over 60 countries, reflecting
the diversity of the local community. It features distinct zones with unique designs and functions,
promoting social interaction and cultural expression.
Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Seoul: Designed by Zaha Hadid, this space combines a public park
with a cultural complex, featuring fluid forms and open spaces that encourage public engagement
and exploration.
Highgate Newtown Community Centre, London: This development retains the original
community center's spirit while expanding its facilities, including a catering school, sports pitch,
and affordable laundry. The architecture merges diverse neighborhood characteristics, offering
playful yet cohesive designs with bright window frames, brick walls, and lush shared gardens.
By studying these examples and applying principles of inclusive design, sustainability, and
cultural sensitivity, the urban space can become a vibrant, functional, and cherished part
of the community.
