PROJECT 1 | Urban Pocket Park Design
Design a small, functional green space in an urban area. Focus on maximizing
Project Overview utility within a limited area by creating spaces for seating, vegetation, and
relaxation that also serve as a retreat from the surrounding urban environment.
✓ Choose a high-density urban area found in Kombolcha city with limited
access to green space.
✓ Site should be Located near residential or commercial areas with potential
Site Selection Criteria
for frequent public use.
✓ Ensure accessibility for all users, including children, seniors, and people with
disabilities.
✓ Site Area: 350-450 m²
PROJECT 2 | Campus Green Space Revitalization
Reimagine an existing open space within KIoT campus. Design a space that
Project Overview encourages connectivity, integrates sustainable greenery, and creates inviting
areas for study, relaxation, and social interaction.
✓ Identify a centrally located area in KIoT campus that is currently
underutilized.
✓ Ensure the space is easily accessible from key campus buildings and
Site Selection Criteria
walkways.
✓ Select a location that can enhance connectivity across the campus.
✓ Site Area: 1000-1500 m²
PROJECT 3 | Waterfront (River side) Park Design
Develop a waterfront park along a river, focusing on the interaction between land
Project Overview and water. Design the park to support community recreation, ecological
preservation, and educational opportunities.
✓ Select a location along a borkena river that allows safe public access.
✓ Ensure the area can support recreational activities while preserving the local
Site Selection Criteria ecosystem.
✓ Avoid areas with frequent flooding or excessive erosion.
✓ Site Area: 1000-1500 m²
PROJECT 4 | Streetscape Redesign for a Green Corridor
Transform a linear urban street into a green corridor that integrates green
Project Overview infrastructure, pedestrian zones, and sustainable transport options. The goal is to
enhance pedestrian experience and reduce environmental impact.
✓ Choose an urban street in Kombolcha city with high pedestrian traffic and
potential for green infrastructure.
✓ Ensure space is suitable for adding safe bike lanes and pedestrian-friendly
Site Selection Criteria elements.
✓ Identify an area that would benefit from reduced heat and improved air
quality.
✓ Site Length: 200-300 meters (street length)

General Design Criteria
▪ Incorporate green infrastructure, such as rain gardens, bioswales, and permeable
surfaces etc., to manage stormwater runoff and reduce environmental impact.
Sustainability ▪ Select native or adaptive plant species that require minimal maintenance, conserve
and water, and enhance biodiversity.
Environmental ▪ Minimize artificial lighting by using energy-efficient solutions, like solar-powered
Impact lights, and consider light pollution reduction.
▪ Utilize sustainable materials that are durable, recyclable, and locally sourced where
possible.
▪ Design for universal accessibility, ensuring compliance with ADA standards or
equivalent guidelines to accommodate users of all abilities.
Accessibility
▪ Include accessible pathways, ramps, and seating areas to create an inclusive space
and
for diverse age groups and physical capabilities.
Inclusivity
▪ Integrate wayfinding and signage that is legible, intuitive, and inclusive, using universal
symbols and multiple languages if needed.
▪ Prioritize user safety through design features like clear sightlines, appropriate lighting,
and separation of pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
▪ Provide ample shaded areas using trees, pergolas, or canopies, considering local
User Comfort climate conditions to enhance comfort in varying weather.
and Safety ▪ Include comfortable seating options, and consider varying seating types (e.g.,
benches, group seating, and single seats) to cater to diverse preferences.
▪ Plan for adequate waste disposal and maintenance access to ensure the space
remains clean and well-kept.
▪ Align the design with the cultural and visual character of the surrounding area,
integrating local materials, forms, or motifs where possible.
▪ Strive for a visually cohesive design that enhances the area’s appeal through careful
Aesthetic and
selection of materials, colors, and textures.
Cultural
▪ Consider public art or interactive installations that reflect the local community’s
Relevance
identity and invite engagement.
▪ Create distinct zones or features to offer varied experiences within the space,
fostering a sense of place and encouraging repeat visits.
▪ Design multi-functional spaces that allow for various activities, such as relaxation,
socialization, and events, ensuring adaptability for future changes.
▪ Plan for appropriate circulation with clear, accessible pathways that connect key areas
Functionality and facilitate smooth movement.
and Flexibility ▪ Ensure that functional elements (e.g., seating, play areas, greenery) are strategically
placed to maximize use and create a harmonious flow within the space.
▪ Consider the long-term adaptability of the space to accommodate potential changes
in user needs, population growth, or urban development.
▪ Include educational signage or features, especially in areas involving ecological
preservation or unique natural elements, to promote awareness of local flora, fauna, or
sustainability practices.
Educational
▪ Engage with the local community during the design phase to gather input and foster a
and
sense of ownership and pride in the final space.
Community
▪ Plan for community interaction and engagement, such as seating arrangements that
Engagement
encourage conversation or open areas for gatherings and events.
▪ Incorporate interactive elements where possible (e.g., water features, play structures,
or sensory gardens) to engage a wide range of users.
