Factories Act, 1948 (India)

The Factories Act, 1948 (Act No. 63 of 1948), as amended by t he Fact ories (Amendment ) Act ,
1987 (Act 20 of 1987), served t o assist in formulat ing nat ional policies in India wit h respect t o
occupat ional safet y and healt h in fact ories and docks in India. It deals wit h various problems
concerning safet y, healt h, efficiency and well-being of t he persons at workplaces. It was replaced
by t he Occupat ional Safet y, Healt h and Working Condit ions Code, 2020.

The Act is administ ered by t he Minist ry of Labour and Factories Act, 1948

The Act is applicable t o any fact ory using elect ricit y and employing 10 or more workers and if not
using power, employing 20 or more workers on any day of t he preceding t welve mont hs, and in any
part of which a manufact uring process is being carried on wit h t he aid of power, or is ordinarily so
carried on, or whereon t went y or more workers are working, or were working on any day of t he
preceding t welve mont hs, and in any part of which a manufact uring process is being carried on
wit hout any power.
