Design Methods
1. Working Stress Design (WSD)
known also as allowable-stress design or straight-line design
working loads or service loads (dead & live loads)
2. Ultimate Strength Design (USD)
it makes use of a more rational approach than does WSD
it uses a more realistic consideration of safety
it provides more economical designs
the working dead & live loads are multiplied by load factors – factored loads

Seatwork
A reinforced concrete rectangular beam has a width of 300 mm and an effective
depth of 500 mm. The beam is reinforced with 6-25 mm diameter tension bars.
Steel yield strength is 415 MPa and concrete strength is 28 Mpa. Calculate the
following;
a. balanced steel ratio (0.02882)
b. maximum steel area for singly reinforced (3133.735 mm2)
c. ultimate moment capacity of the beam (432.061 KN-m)
