He first worked with the NHK Symphony Orchestra in 1985, and since 2014, he appeared

while at the orchestra’s subscription concert series, he made remarkable achievements by
conducting works such as Beethoven’s 3rd symphony Eroica in 2017 and Schubert’s 8th

for his uncompromising music-making, will unfold Brahms Symphony No.1 with the NHK
Symphony Orchestra.

Franz Schubert (1797–1828)

Symphony No. 4 C Minor D. 417, Tragische (Tragic)

Ever since Beethoven (1770–1827) unveiled his Symphony No. 5 (Fate) in 1808, C minor’s
connection with darkness and anguish has been an unconcealed fact in the symphonic sphere.
The German giant of indomitable will led C minor to C major triumphantly in his No. 5
following the spirit of “per aspera ad astra (through hardships to the stars),” which obviously
inspired Schubert’s No. 4 and Brahms’ undermentioned No. 1. Entitled Tragische (Tragic) by
Schubert himself, No. 4 is the first of only two symphonies he set in a minor key along with the
famous Die Unvollendete (Unfinished) in B minor.
Born in Vienna, Schubert was a precocious musical genius. His family introduced him to
music before he enrolled the Stadtkonvikt (imperial seminary), where he studied composition.
While in school, he became familiar with Classical works by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven,
and he performed in and conducted the seminary’s student orchestra. He then entered
the teaching profession, before composing the Symphonies No. 4 and No. 5 in 1816, his
nineteenth year.
No. 4’s opening movement has an ominous slow introduction. The faster main section
in sonata form lets strings give the first theme, suggestive of Beethoven’s C-minor String
Quartet op. 18-4. The next slow movement is full of Schubertian tunefulness, while the third
movement is a scherzo-like minuet with inventive rhythms. The symphony’s finale, as with the
first movement, witnesses C minor giving way to C major.

PROGRAM A NHK SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, TOKYO 57

Johannes Brahms (1833–1897)

Symphony No. 1 C Minor Op. 68

Schubert remained obscure all his life, his abovementioned No. 4 being premiered publicly
more than two decades after his death as is often the case with his works. Brahms, in contrast,
leaped into fame overnight at age 20, thanks to the glowing praise for him that the composer
and critic Robert Schumann (1810–1856) released to the public in 1853.
Brahms, now a promising composer, began to gestate his first symphony around 1855.
However, he felt extreme pressure to extend the symphonic history, which seemed to be
already concluded by Beethoven the giant. Also due to his highly self-critical nature, Brahms
completed his No. 1 over twenty years later in 1876, on top of that, he revised it next year after
hearing the premiere. Everything comes to those who wait: the conductor Hans von Bülow
famously applauded it as “Beethoven’s Tenth.” This work indeed shows the greatest respect
A for Beethoven’s legacy, at once being a veritable “Brahms’ First” of his own voice.
Although a product of the Romantic era, Brahms’ No. 1 has the almost same
instrumentation as Beethoven’s No. 5. The austere introduction opens Brahms’ No. 1, stating
the C/C-sharp/D motif over timpani pounding. This chromatic three-note motto would
recur in diverse forms throughout the symphony following Beethoven’s meticulous motivic
13 & 14. APR. 2024

development. The absence of minuet/scherzo movement may surprise listeners familiar with
the genre of symphony: here Brahms strikes out in a new direction proposing a brief graceful
interlude prior to the last movement. The finale’s dark introduction beginning in C minor
reaches the C-major “Alphorn melody” blown by horns: from Switzerland, Brahms had sent
a birthday card with this melody to his muse Clara (Schuman’s wife) penning below it the
following words: “High on the mountains, deep in the valleys, I greet you a thousand times!”
The ensuing main sonata section could be likened to a hymn to C major, with the lyrical first
theme bearing a great resemblance to Beethoven’s An die Freude (Ode to Joy) tune from his
Symphony No. 9.

He started his career spectacularly as a pianist by winning major
competitions including the ARD International Music Competition in

Berlin, and is scheduled to become Artistic Director of the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic
Orchestra in September 2024.
His first collaboration with the NHK Symphony Orchestra was in 1979 when he was a
pianist playing Beethoven concerto under the baton of Günter Wand. In 2017, after an absence
of thirty years, he returned to the orchestra as one of the world’s most prominent conductors to

works of Schumann and Bruckner, his favorite composers, to delight his audiences.
Christoph Eschenbach was born in Breslau, Germany (now Wrocław, Poland) in 1940. He lost
his father in the war, and was brought up by his mother’s cousin. He experienced war first hand

Robert Schumann (1810–1856)

Genoveva, opera Op. 81—Overture

The German composer Schumann played a leading role in musical Romanticism. Although
opting to be a musician, he took after his bookseller-author father in literary aptitude. Not
surprisingly, Schumann’s compositions owe a great deal to literature, the fine examples being
Papillons and Kreisleriana for piano respectively inspired by Romantic writers Jean Paul and
E. T. A. Hoffmann, not forgetting Szenen aus Goethes Faust (Scenes from Goethe's Faust) for voices
and orchestra. The composer wielded a powerful pen as an influential music critic as well.
Unexpectedly, Genoveva is the sole opera Schumann completed while thinking in vain
about over forty literary subjects for his operatic projects. Written in 1847–1848, Genoveva is
a product of his Dresden years. (Incidentally, Wagner served as the conductor of the city’s court opera
from 1843 to 1849.)
The story, set in the 8th century, features the knight Siegfried (Count of Brabant) and his
faithful wife Genoveva. He goes on a crusade leaving her in their palace under the protection
of his steward Golo. Genoveva spurns advances of Golo who, now thirsty for revenge,
B
informs Siegfried of Genoveva’s framed-up affair with a servant. After ordering her execution,
Siegfried discovers Golo’s intrigue and is reunited with Genoveva who narrowly escaped death.
Introducing some of the leitmotifs (recurrent melodies associated with a certain character, emotion,

24 & 25. APR. 2024

etc.) used in the ensuing opera, the overture in sonata form has the ominous preamble with the
violins’ grievous descending melody. The C-major vigorous conclusion foretells the positive
outcome of the tragedy.

Robert Schumann

Cello Concerto A Minor Op. 129

A core of the sparse but popular repertories for solo cello and orchestra alongside Haydn’s and
Dvořák’s, Schumann’s Cello Concerto has been praised for its natural, masterly treatment of
the solo instrument. It is partly because he was knowledgeable about this instrument as he took
cello lessons in his childhood.
Schumann finished the draft of the Cello Concerto in 1850, soon after settling in
Düsseldorf as the welcome new municipal music director. This bright moment brought a
mental stability for a little while to him who chronically suffered severe — sometimes life-
threatening — depression throughout his adult life.
Originally entitled Konzertstück (concert-piece) by the composer himself, the work indeed
makes itself conspicuous among the standard 19th-century solo concertos focusing on contrast
and even confrontation between solo and orchestra parts. Here the soloist, never technically
ostentatious, teams up with the orchestra, the most symbolical example being a duet between
the solo cellist and the orchestra’s principal cellist in the slow mellifluous middle movement.
Moreover, all the three movements are performed seamlessly without pause, being linked
by the recurrent three-chord motif (resounding E–A–C melody) introduced at the outset of the
work. Other unconventional features as solo concerto are the first movement’s moderate
tempo, its lack of extended orchestral introduction and its absence of cadenza (virtuosic passages

PROGRAM B NHK SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, TOKYO 61

performed by soloist usually without orchestra): instead, the lively final movement has a cadenza (yet
accompanied) heard immediately before the uplifted A-major ending.

Robert Schumann

Symphony No. 2 C Major Op. 61

Every composition of Schumann is certainly a landmark achievement in music history. Also,
his foresighted devotion as an active critic introduced Chopin, Brahms and other young
geniuses straightaway to his contemporaries. Another service we owe to Schumann is that he
saved Schubert (1797–1828)’s monumental symphony (The Great D.944) from oblivion and
arranged for its first public performance (1839) in Leipzig under Mendelssohn’s baton. This
historic event and Schumann’s insightful article about the work led to proper evaluations of the
Viennese master.
Schumann attended in December 1845 in Dresden, then his base, a performance of
The Great. This is thought to be a source of the irresistible creative impulse for him to set to
work on a new composition. Completed thus in 1846, Schumann’s Symphony No. 2 in C
B major — the same home key as The Great – was premiered the same year in Leipzig under
Mendelssohn’s baton as with, again, The Great. (Shortly after, the first and last movements were
revised.)
At an early stage of composition, Schumann, who just recovered from a serious nervous
breakdown, tells Mendelssohn in a letter that trumpets have been blasting in his head. In truth,
24 & 25. APR. 2024

the slow opening brass fanfare of the Symphony No. 2 lets “trumpets” persistently resound
a dotted motto (a brief motif including an ascending fifth interval: C–G). The lively main sonata
section of the first movement immediately recalls this motto, as it is embedded in the principal
“galloping” theme with dotted and double-dotted rhythms. The second movement, a wild
scherzo unconventionally in duple time, has trumpets and horns grandly blow the motto at
the end. The next slow movement in C minor, frequently pointed out to be inspired by J. S.
Bach and his contrapuntal style, is the only movement untouched by the motto which recurs
repeatedly throughout the symphony. The final movement, a freely treated sonata with an
exceptionally extended coda, has a hymn-like climax making the motto return, before timpani
powerfully leads the orchestra to the symphony’s jubilant finish.

Anton Bruckner (1824–1896)

Symphony No. 7 E Major

December 30, 1884 was no doubt the best day in the musical life of the Austrian late-Romantic
composer Bruckner. On that day, the sixty-year-old man’s Symphony No. 7 was world-
premiered in Leipzig by Arthur Nikisch leading the Gewandhaus Orchestra to be an immense
success. The work’s ensuing premieres in Munich and Vienna also won rave reviews. No. 7

PROGRAM C NHK SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, TOKYO 63

thus brought the first genuine fame to Bruckner, a late bloomer who had had to long put up
with cold treatment of his symphonies until then.
Another red-letter event in his life was his first meeting with Wagner (1813–1883) in
May 1865 when the latter was in Munich for the scheduled premiere of his Tristan und Isolde
(Tristan and Isolde). For Bruckner who was a devout Christian, his idol Wagner was, so to speak,
his second divine being. In 1873, the younger man famously visited the German master and
dedicated him his Symphony No. 3.
Although Wagner’s influence is seen here and there in Bruckner’s output, it is particularly
hard to describe his No. 7 without repeating Wagner’s name. The second Adagio movement
in rondo form is worth specially mentioning on this, as it is a funeral music for Wagner.
Bruckner penned this elegiac Adagio knowing that the maestro was critically ill. Cast in A–B–
A–B–A form, it announces at the start the solemn A-section’s theme with a small ensemble
including four Wagner tubas (in two sizes). Usually performed by horn players, these oval-
shaped brass instruments were invented on the initiative of Wagner for his tetralogy Der Ring
des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung). Bruckner’s radiant B-sections, in major keys, sound as if
to honor Wagner for his achievements. And furthermore, according to Bruckner’s recollection,
he, crushed with grief by being told about Wagner’s death (February 13, 1883), wrote the coda
featuring four Wagner tubas to mourn for the dead.
No. 7 begins with the seemingly endless melody sung mainly by cellos over the strings’
quiet tremolo (tremulous effect), Bruckner’s usual trick to open his symphonies. This long
introspective melody, given as the first theme of the opening sonata movement, would change

C into several important themes of the entire symphony as a unifying element. The outset of the
last movement, for example, lets the violins reintroduce the unifying melody as its first sonata
theme, in jolly bouncing rhythm this time, but still over the strings’ quiet tremolo. This colossal
symphony concludes forcefully recalling the beginning of the whole work as if it came full
circle, or more specifically, restating the fragmentary unifying melody three times.
19 & 20. APR. 2024

Twelve years after No. 7 was first performed, Bruckner passed away in Vienna at age 72.
His funeral attendees heard the symphony’s Adagio movement arranged for four horns. And at
the entombment, one of Bruckner’s organ pupils improvised on themes from Wagner’s Parsifal.
