Worked Examples

The document presents a series of engineering problems related to the tension resistance and load-bearing capacity of various steel connections and components. It includes calculations for single lapped connections, welded and bolted unequal angles, and the design of diagonals in a steel truss. Each question specifies materials, dimensions, and design loads, requiring application of relevant engineering principles and standards.

WORKED EXAMPLES

Question 1:

Determine the tension resistance of the single lapped connection made of two steel plates (each
with thickness 25 mm) of S275. All bolts are M30 with 2 mm clearance. All units in mm.

Question 2:

Check if a 125 x 75 x 10 unequal angle in grade S355 steel, welded by the longer leg is suitable to
resist a design load Ned of 500 kN. For an unequal angle connected (welded) by its larger edge,
the effective area may be taken as equal to the gross area (clause 4.13 (2) of EN1993-1-8).

Question 3:

Check if a 150 x 75 x 10 unequal angle in grade S355 steel, bolted (with a line of four 24 mm
HSFG bolts, at 125 mm centres) through the longer leg is suitable to resist a design load NEd of
500 kN.

Question 4:

The maximum tensile force in the diagonals of a steel truss NEd = 350 kN. The cross-
section consists of two angles of equal legs, in steel grade S275. Design the diagonals assuming
two distinct possibilities for the connections. (a) Welded connection on one leg. (b) Bolted
connection on one leg.
