Floating and Buoyancy STEM Investigation Worksheet

This document outlines a STEM investigation on floating and buoyancy using coins and flasks filled with water. It provides step-by-step instructions for conducting the experiment, including safety precautions and a recording sheet for predictions, observations, and results. Participants are encouraged to analyze the effects of buoyant force and water resistance on the coins during the experiment.

Floating and Buoyancy

STEM Investigation

You will need:

• 2x 5c or 10c pieces

• 2x tall flask, measuring cylinder or similar

• water (to fill ¾ of the flask)

• 2x stopwatches

Instructions:

1. Fill the first flask ¾ full with water. Leave the other one empty.

2. Hold the two coins above the two flasks, one coin above each flask.

3. Have a different person ready with each of the stopwatches.

4. At the same time, release both coins and start the stopwatches.

5. The first stopwatch should time how long the first coin takes to hit the bottom of the
empty flask.
The second stopwatch should time how long the second coin takes to hit the bottom
of the flask with water in it.

6. Observe what happens as the coins are released.

7. Record any observations and the two times in the table on the recording sheet.

Prediction: Draw and write a prediction of what you think will happen when
the coins are dropped into both flasks.

Observations: Draw and write about what you see happen to each coin when it
is dropped into each flask.

Results: Record the times from the stopwatch into the chart below. This data
could be used to make a graph.

Time

Flask 1 - Water

Flask 2 - Empty

Explanation: Now that you have read the information about buoyant force and
water resistance and observed the investigation, write an explanation of the
forces that are acting on the coin in this experiment.
