READ THE STORY BELOW AND USE IT TO ANSWER QUESTION 1-15.

Two of the earliest Europeans to work in Botswana were David Livingstone and John
Mackenzie.
David Livingstone, like Moffat was born in Scotland. Like Moffat, David Livingstone was the
son of poor parents. David received little schooling and at the age of ten he started working in a
cotton factory at his home in Blantyre and worked there for fourteen years.
David Livingstone was an intelligent boy. His father had many books and David read as much
as he could. Slowly, his reading and writing improved, he went to a night school in the evenings
to learn Latin. After this he studied hard and became a doctor. During these years David often
used to wonder how he should spend his life. What should he do? What should he become?
Then, one day he realized that he had made up his mind, he would become a missionary, and he
had studied medicine, he would be a missionary doctor. So it was that in 1841, at the age of
twenty eight, Doctor David Livingstone arrived at Kuruman to join Robert Moffat.
David Livingstone did not stay long at Kuruman, but set out to live with Bakwena. Once there he
quickly learned Setswana and had begun to travel, visiting the Bakaa, the Bangwato and the
Bakalaka. In 1845, after being mauled by a lion, he returned to Kuruman and there again he met
Sarah Moffat the eldest daughter of Robert Moffat. Later, they were married. Soon David
Livingstone returned to the Bakwena tribe, and it was at Kolobeng, that Livingstone baptized
Sechele. Chief Sechele was the first chief to become a Christian. David Livingstone had heard
many people talk about a very large lake which lay to the North. This made him very curious
and he longed to see it, so in 1849 he set out for Lake Ngami. The journey to Boteti River and on
to Lake Ngami took two months, but at last he stood at the side of the big lake. Today, the lake
has largely dried up but in those days the water was deep.
David Livingstone spent much of his time travelling. The London Missionary Society wanted to
send missionaries to settle with Sebetwane, who was then living in Barotsiland, and
Livingstone’s task was to obtain permission for the missionaries to go there. It was not until
Livingstone had made three attempts that he managed to cross to the Chobe River. On one of
those journeys it is said that he met a young boy who was to become the leader in Botswana.
This young boy called Khama, and later become known as Khama the Great. It is said that they
met at a place called Borakanelo (the meeting place) which is very near to where the Serowe
Teachers Training College stands.
David Livingstone did not spend all of his time in Africa with the Batswana. After twelve years
he was sent to further north in Central Africa to look for places for missionary stations to be
built. Eventually he died at Ujiji in the country of Tanzania in 1873 at the age of sixty. He had
found many interesting things in Botswana and he had told people in England about the country
and its people. He prepared the way for others to follow him.

2
One of those who came after David Livingstone was John Mackenzie. As with both Moffat and
Livingstone, Mackenzie came from a humble family in Scotland. He first learned to be a printer,
and later joined the London Missionary Society and arrived in Africa in 1858. John Mackenzie’s
most important post was with the Bamangwato. He stayed at Shoshong for fourteen years and
was there at the time when gold was found near the Tati River. He helped Chief Matsheng of the
Bamangwato to write to the British government about the gold diggers who were coming into the
area.
The remains of the old church can still be seen at Shoshong, and you can also see the large flat
stone that served as a bell. When the flat stone is struck with another stone, it sounds exactly like
a church bell. When a service was to be held, the bell was sounded to call the worshippers. When
Mackenzie left Shoshong he went to Kuruman, and from there he tried to have Bechuanaland
made a British Protectorate. After a few years, in 1882, he went to England to explain why
protection was necessary. As a result of what he did and said, many people became sure that
something had to be done. Many other things were to happen before the Protectorate was
declared in 1885, but John Mackenzie played a big part by telling people about Bechuanaland
and what was happening there.
