Week #3: Eyes and Ears

 Healthy History Write Up- pg 29


 Look at article for abbreviations we shouldn’t use
 Pruritus = itching
 Syncope= fainting/ pass out
 Vertigo= a version of dizziness  the room is spinning
 Textbook pg. 289  Eye

Eyes:
 Central Vision Acquity
o Snellen Chart: reading letters on chart; stand 20 feet from board
 Used to test to see if you have 20/20 vision
 Ex: 20/200: Cant see at 20 feet what the average person can
read at 200 feet
 Covers cranial never 2 (pg 638)  optic nerve and tests vision

o Near vision= presbiota
o Visual Field by confrontation: test peripheral vision
o Cornea Light Reflex: Take the pen light and from a distance shine it
into the patient eye and look for a white dot  dot in pupil area
 Shows that the muscles are intake/ stable  if not the same in
each eye then it would show a lazy eye
 Shows if you have a weekend muscle
o Diagnostic Position Test: testing the mobility of the muscle of the eyes
 Moving on object in an H movement and have the patient only
move their eyes and keep their head still
 CN3, 4, 6 are being tested
o External Check- General
 Symmetry between the two eyes
 Is everything intact and symmetrical
 Eyelids and eyelashes open evenly
o Eyeball
 Conjunctiva  pull lower lids down and look up; looking for
infection
 Sclera  white part of the eye
o Cornea
o Eversion of the Upper lid: normal range of finding
o Tear Ducts: press on it and see if there is any drainage
o Iris and Pupil:
 Looking for:
 P- pupils
 E-equal/ round
 R- reactive
 L- light
 A- accommodation  do the eyes open up (for far
away) or do the pupils narrow (for near)
 Red Reflex
o Back of Eye (fundus)
 Macula and Optic Disc
o Cover Test
Ears
 Palpate/ pull down the ear
 Press on tranches  can establish if there is an ear infection or if there is in
an infection in eardrum, canal, or problem with the eye
 Looking for the tympanic membrane when looking into the ear
o It will appear pearly gray
o Move the ear up and back for an adult
o On the left side: cone of light (left side: 7 o’clock; right side: 5’oclock)
