APL 108 - Mechanics of Solids

1. On the free surface of a bearing made of commercial bronze (E = 110GP a, ν = 0.35),

the principal strains are determined to be ϵ1 = 0.0015 and ϵ2 = 0.0005. Assume a
state of plane stress and the z-axis to be out of the plane of the free surface.

(a) Derive the Hooke’s law equation for the plane stress case.
(b) A design criterion for the bearing is that maximum tensile stress does not exceed
200 MPa. Is the criterion satisfied for the given strain state?

2. A cantilever beam, 50 mm wide by 150 mm high and 6 m long, carries a load that
varies uniformly from zero at the free end to 1000 N/m at the wall.

(a) Compute the magnitude and location of the maximum flexural stress.
(b) Determine the type and magnitude of the stress in a fibre 20 mm from the top
of the beam at a section 2 m from the free end.

3. A simply supported beam, 2 inches wide by 4 inches high and 12 ft long, is subjected
to a concentrated load of 2000 lb at a point 3 ft from one of the supports. Determine
the maximum fibre and the stress in a fibre located 0.5 inches from the top of the
beam at midspan.

4. A wood beam 6 inches wide by 12 inches deep is loaded, as shown below. If the
maximum flexural stress is 1200 psi, find the maximum values of W0 and P , which
can be applied simultaneously.
