Data Types

We can change the data type for a field from:


1. Data Source page
2. Data pane.

Mixed Data Types:


Sometimes the files that we connect to Tableau might include columns with a
mixture of data types, such as numbers & text or number and date. When you
connect the file, the mixed value column is mapped only to a single data type
field. Therefore, a column containing numbers and dates could be mapped as a
number or a Date data type.

Tableau maps the mixed-value columns to data types by looking at the first
10,000 rows in the Excel data source and the first 1024 rows in the CSV data
source. For example, if most of the first 10,000 rows are text values, the entire
column is mapped to use the text data type.

Note- Empty cells also create mixed value columns because their formatting is
different from text, dates, or numbers
