ESP Definition
a. ESP is a learner-centered approach to teaching English as an additional
language, which focuses on developing communicative competence in a specific
discipline such as academic, accounting, agrology, business, IT, teaching, and
engineering.
b. ESP is a learner-centered pedagogy
c. ESP is defined to meet the specific needs of the learner
d. ESP makes use of the underlying methodology and activities of the disciplines it
serves
e. ESP is centered on the language (grammar, lexis), skills, and discourse
appropriate to these activities.
f. ESP is designed to meet the learner's specific needs within their purpose for
learning.
g. Hutchinson and Waters (1987) define ESP as "an approach to language learning
based on learner need. The foundation of all ESP is the simple question: Why
does the learner need to learn a foreign language? ... ESP, then, is an approach
to language teaching in which all decisions as to content and method are based
on the learner's reason for learning.
h. Dudley Evans and St John (1998, p. 5) define ESP in terms of “absolute” and
“variable” characteristics.
i. Strevens 1992 emphasizes ESP as an approach, not a product that means the
language is used high-lighten.
Types of ESP (David Carter, 1983)
a. English as a restricted language. The language used by air traffic controllers or
waiters is English as a restricted language.
b. English for Academic and Occupational Purposes. These subject areas are
further divided into two branches: English for Academic (EAP) and English for
Occupational Purposes (EOP). An example of EOP for the EST branch is
'English for Technicians', whereas EAP for the EST branch is 'English for Medical
Studies.'
c. English with specific topics. This type of ESP is uniquely concerned with
anticipated future English needs of, for example, scientists requiring English for
postgraduate reading studies, attending conferences, or working in foreign
institutions.

terminology on the job soon after completing the course.
✔ There is a rapid increase in job productivity and efficiency as employees are
better prepared to communicate with their clientele and colleagues.
SUMMARY (This part presents the ANALYSIS/ABSTRACTION of the
lesson, at least two paragraphs).

Language plays a vital role in our lives. Without the use of language, proper
communication is unattainable for us. Language also helps us view someone's
personality, attitude, and specific field they belong to. Since all of us differ from using
language, we must identify and learn the language used by the majority. English for
Specific Purposes or ESP would help us how since it focuses on teaching English for the
specific needs of the students.

ESP is primarily concerned with developing students' communicative skills and

competence in a specific field. ESP is divided into three types named by David charter
1983 English as a restricted language, English for academic purposes or occupational
purposes, and English with specific topics. The language used in air traffic controllers
and waiters is an example of restricted language. Medical study is an example of English
for academic purposes, and technician is an example of English for occupational
purposes. The scientist also requiring English for the postgraduate attending conference
is an example of English for specific topics. The ESP course is also characterized into
three According to Charter (1983): the authenticity of the course contents, the purpose-
related orientation, and the Self-direction. Evans and St John (1998) define ESP in terms
of “absolute” and “variable” characteristics.

ESP is a wide scope not to be learned in a certain little amount of time. It must be
learned with interest, same as through with exact teaching pedagogy. The main reason
for knowing ESP is to enhance what the students are learning. It enables them to use
English they know even more English since their interest in their field will motivate them
to interact with speakers. Not only with the students but also with the business sectors
where it increases job productivity and efficiency as employees are better prepared to
communicate with their clientele and colleagues. The essence of ESP relies on the
hands of the teacher with the basis of students learning interests.
