Muscular system

Temporalis - Elevates and retracts the jaw.

Masseter - Elevates the jaw for chewing.

Platysma - Depresses the jaw and tenses the neck skin.

Trapezius - Moves the scapula and supports arm rotation.

Deltoid - Abducts, flexes, and extends the shoulder.

Triceps brachii - Extends the forearm.

Biceps brachii - Flexes the forearm and supinates the hand.

Brachialis - Primary forearm flexor.

Pronator teres - Pronates the forearm.

Brachioradialis - Flexes the forearm at the elbow.

Flexor carpi radialis - Flexes and abducts the wrist.

Palmaris longus - Tenses the palm and flexes the wrist.

Iliopsoas - Flexes the thigh and stabilizes the hip.

Pectineus - Adducts and flexes the thigh.

Rectus femoris - Extends the knee and flexes the hip.

Vastus lateralis - Extends the knee.

Vastus medialis - Extends the knee and stabilizes the patella.

Fibularis longus - Everts and plantarflexes the foot.

Extensor digitorum longus - Extends toes and dorsiflexes the foot.

Tibialis anterior - Dorsiflexes and inverts the foot.

Epicranius, frontal belly - Raises eyebrows and wrinkles the forehead.

Orbicularis oculi - Closes the eyelids.


Zygomaticus - Elevates the corners of the mouth (smiling).

Orbicularis oris - Closes and puckers the lips.

Sternohyoid - Depresses the hyoid bone.

Sternocleidomastoid - Rotates and flexes the neck.

Pectoralis minor - Stabilizes the scapula.

Pectoralis major - Adducts and rotates the arm medially.

Serratus anterior - Protracts and rotates the scapula upward.

30. Intercostals - Elevate or depress ribs during breathing.

31. Rectus abdominis - Flexes the spine and compresses the abdomen.

32. External oblique - Rotates and flexes the spine; compresses the abdomen.

33. Internal oblique - Same as external oblique.

34. Transversus abdominis - Compresses the abdomen.

35. Tensor fasciae latae - Abducts and stabilizes the hip.

36. Sartorius - Flexes, abducts, and laterally rotates the thigh.

37. Adductor longus - Adducts and flexes the thigh.

38. Gracilis - Adducts the thigh and flexes the knee.

39. Gastrocnemius - Plantarflexes the foot and flexes the knee.

40. Soleus - Plantarflexes the foot.
