Listen to a piece of music called “Overture” from Handel’s ‘Messiah’. You will hear this piece played
three times. Answer the following questions as you listen.
1. How many different sections does this piece of music have? 2 (1)
2. How can you tell this? There is a very short pause/period of silence between the two
sections of the music as the sections “change”. (1)
3. How would you describe the FORM AND STRUCTURE of this piece? (circle your answer) (1)

4. What are the main differences in TEMPO, DURATION and TEXTURE between the different sections in
this piece?
TEMPO – The tempo in the first section is SLOW (1) whereas the tempo in the second section
is FAST/FASTER (1) (2)
DURATION – The notes in the first section are of LONG/LONGER duration (1) whereas the notes
in the second section where much SHORTER in terms of duration (1) (2)
TEXTURE – The texture in the first section was much thinner (block chordal/homophonic) (1)
whereas the texture in the second section was much thicker (polyphonic/contrapuntal) with a
lot of different musical lines and parts interweaving and sounding “busier” (1) (2)
5. What happens to the TEMPO of the music just before the end of the piece? Just before the
end of the piece in Section B, the tempo of the music SLOWS DOWN again (rit./rall.) (1)
