SECTION A

ITEMI 1
Two friends formed a partnership and agreed to deal in animal feeds, Ben
contributed seven hundred and fifty thousand shillings while Carey
contributed UGX.900,000. They agreed to save 1/5 of their gross profit in
their joint account and further use 20% of the remainder to buy materials
for new products there after share the net profit in the ratio of their initial
contribution.
At the end of their first year of operation they made gross profits
amounting to UGX. 3,160,000 and Carey deposited Bens share on his
account but Ben was not sure if it was the actual amount he was
supposed to get so he sought for your help to avoid biasness.
Ben sent you to withdraw some money from his phone but had forgotten
the pin however he remembered that he had saved it as 179 in decimal
base which he converts to base five to get the actual pin.
Task:
a) Show ben how to determine the actual amount that was to be
deposited in his bank account.
b) How did you manage to get the actual pin in order to make the
withdrawal from Ben’s phone?

Your school has to transport 576 learners for a trip, they want to use type
A buses which can carry 64 learners each and type B buses that can carry
48 learners each, they also want to use at least 10 buses, type A bus can
be hired at UGX.400,000 while type B can be hired at UGX.350,000, the
school administration wants to minimize expenses on transport as much
as possible.
For the trip the teacher in charge bought 5 packs writing pads and 3
boxes of pens from a stationary shop in town at UGX. 190,000 and 2
packs of writing pads and 3 boxes of pens at UGX. 130,000 he wants to
resale the items to any student who may not have during the trip but not
sure of the cost price of each individual item.
Tasks:
ai) Write down the mathematical relationships that represents this
situation.
ii)Using your mathematical skills advise the school administration on how
many buses of each type they can hire to minimize the transport cost and
how much that cost will be.
b) Determine the cost of each pack of writing pads and a box of pens.

PART I
ITEM 3
A village cyclist club wants to select members that are to participate in
the district cycling competition, they registered 60 people for the race
from which they are to do the selections which is in two phases.
Those who will qualify for phase two from phase one, will be those who
could finish within a time less than or equal to the overall average time for
all participants. Those in phase two to qualify for the district competitions,
have to finish within 125 minutes and less.
Below is the summary of time in which the people finished the race in
phase one;

b) What is the probability that out of those that qualified for the second
phase, the organization will get some who will participate in the district
competition.
ITEM 4
Your uncle is an agricultural officer and has advised farmers in the
village to grow some other crops to boost their income, these food crops
include melons, cassava and pumpkin because they are bought at higher
prices. In the next planting season 120 farmers decided to grow at least
one of the crops.
62 farmers decided to plant pumpkins, 83 planted melons and 60 planted
cassava.20 planted pumpkins and cassava, 30 planted pumpkins and
melons while 40 decided to plant melons and cassava. 18 farmers planted
melons only. The officer wants to order for pesticides that will be used
when in need and to get for them a collective market so that they will gain
more from their harvest so he needs to summarize the data
Tasks
a) As a mathematics student help your uncle to summarize the data
using a suitable drawing.
b) If a farmer is to be selected at random from the village, what is the
chance that he will need pesticides for at least two crops.
PART 11
ITEM 5
Your sister has got a new job at a company that designs packaging
materials, her boss has given her a sample of one of the new designs for
gift wrappings and asked her to assemble it overnight so they can show it
to a new client in the morning but she is unable to do it so she asks for
your help.

make each if the base is supposed to be of length 20cm and the height of
the top point should be 24 cm from the center of the base.
Your sister also tells you that she will be getting a salary of UGX.1500.000
per month that includes, transport allowance of UGX.200,000 and lunch
allowance of UGX.6000 per day only for the five days she works each
week. She wants to open up an insurance policy for her child that requires
her to pay a premium of UGX. 250,000 per month and also save UGX.
400,000 for future investment, but has also to pay tax using the rates
below.

ii) using your mathematics help your sister to determine the least material
required to make one pack.
b) Will your sister be able to pay her child’s premium.
ITEM 6
Your father is one of the organizers of a marathon they want to draw the
map of the route that the participants will use during the race.
At their chosen starting point A, they chose to take a road that turned
E30oS and they moved for 5km where they set up point B that will be used
as a check point ,they then turned through 235 o moving a distance of 9km
to point C which will be the finishing point, however on returning to office
they decided that the finishing point should be put at point A in order to
cut costs of organizing the two places but they were not sure of the
details of that route from C to A that had to be included on the map.
They want to hire a vehicle that will be used to film the racers, the vehicle

available consumes 2 litres per km and a litre costs UGX.5500, the owner
of the vehicle has asked for UGX.500,000 plus fueling the vehicle for the
total distance to be covered but at the fuel station he is to get a discount
of 5% for every 100,000 worth of fuel he buys since he is a regular
customer.
TASKS
(a) Help your father to determine the direction from point C to the new
finishing point A that will be shown on the map to be drawn.
(b)You are required to determine the total cost of hiring the vehicle.
ii) Do you think the vehicle owner will save some money on fuel if so how
much.
