Lesson Plan: Arithmetic Means and the nth Term of an Arithmetic Sequence

Grade Level: Grade 10

Subject: Mathematics
Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Define an arithmetic sequence.
2. Calculate the arithmetic mean between two numbers.
3. Determine the nth term of an arithmetic sequence using the formula.
Materials Needed:
 Whiteboard and markers
 Projector and screen
 Student notebooks and pens
 Handouts with practice problems
Lesson Outline:
1. Introduction
o Begin with a brief review of sequences.

o Define an arithmetic sequence.

 An arithmetic sequence is a sequence of numbers in which the difference

between consecutive terms is constant.
o Provide examples of arithmetic sequences.

 Example: 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, ...

2. Explaining Arithmetic Mean
o Define the arithmetic mean.

 The arithmetic mean between two numbers is the number that is halfway
between them.
o Show how to calculate the arithmetic mean between two numbers.

 Example: The arithmetic mean between 3 and 7 is (3 + 7) / 2 = 5.

o Provide a few more examples and solve them with the class.

o Allow students to practice finding arithmetic means with a partner.

3. Determining the nth Term of an Arithmetic Sequence

o Introduce the formula for the nth term of an arithmetic sequence:

o Work through a couple of examples:

o Allow students to practice determining the nth term with given sequences in
pairs.
4. Practice and Application
o Distribute handouts with a mix of problems:

 Calculate the arithmetic mean between two given numbers.

 Determine the nth term of given arithmetic sequences.
o Encourage students to work individually and then check their answers with a
peer.
5. Assessment and Conclusion
o Review the key concepts covered in the lesson.

o Quick formative assessment through a few oral questions.

 What is the common difference in the sequence 3, 7, 11, 15, ...?

 How do you find the arithmetic mean between two numbers?
 What is the formula for the nth term of an arithmetic sequence?
o Answer any remaining questions.

Homework:
 Assign a set of problems from the textbook or a worksheet that requires students to:
1. Find the arithmetic mean between pairs of numbers.
2. Determine the nth term for various arithmetic sequences.
Evaluation:
 Assess student understanding through their participation in class, accuracy in practice
problems, and performance on the homework assignment.
