Lab Report 3

Find the Member Forces in Truss using ETABS software

Name: Ahsan Maqsood


Reg. No: 20-civil-018

Submitted to: Engr. Yasir Rasheed


Procedure:
Step 1:
Open the software. Select new model. A popup will open. Select the following option as shown
below:

Step 2:
Select the number of grids, story height and following options as shown in screenshot below:
Step 3:
Select draw truss structure with the help of option located on left as shown below:

Step 4:
Now, To copy member, Select the specific member then go to edit and click on replicate. Select
the distances if you want to go right then +value if left then -value as shown in picture below:
Step 5:
To trim the unnecessary portion of truss, Simply Select the member which you want to trim then
select the member to which extend you want it to trim. Lastly, Select the point where you want to
start trimming. After this simply go to the edit and click Align Joints/Frames and select TRIM as
shown in picture below:

Step 6:
Now, Draw the truss as shown in the picture:
Step 7:
The truss has been drawn. Now, Go to the load pattern and define the imposed load as super dead
load as shown below:

Step 5:
Go to assign. Click on joint and select restraints. Click on desire supports as shown in screenshot
below:
Step 6:
After defining the load pattern. Go to the Assign and click on JOINT LOADS and apply loads as
shown in picture below:

Step 7:
Run the analysis on the TRUSS and Deflection will be as shown in picture attached:
Step 9:
For SFD & BMD, Click on the icon at the top and select the super imposed load as shown below:

Step 10:
After analysis, we Successfully drew the Shear force & Bending Moment Diagram. The Shear
Force and Bending Moment Diagram of the beam is shown as mentioned below:

Step 11:
For Axial Loads, Click on the axial force option as shown in picture below. RED color shows
COMPRESSION & YELLOW shows TENSION.
