Direct object
The direct object is the person or thing that receives
the action of the verb directly. It answers the question
"what?" or "whom?" after the verb.
Example 1: She reads a book.
Verb: reads
Direct object: a book (answers the question: "What
does she read?")
Example 2: I called him.
Verb: called
Direct object: him (answers the question: "Whom
did I call?"
The indirect object is the person or thing that
receives the direct object. It answers the
question "to whom?" or "for whom?" the action
is done.
Example 1: She gave me a gift.
Indirect Verb: gave
Direct object: a gift (answers "What did
object
she give?")
Indirect object: me (answers "To whom
did she give the gift?")
Example 2: He sent his friend a letter.
Verb: sent
Direct object: a letter (answers "What did
he send?")
