The Great Belt

Welcome to
the Danish straits

Storebælt
One of the most densely trafficked bodies of water in the world, the Great
Belt, is the connecting waterway between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.
Every year, tens of thousands of vessels of all sizes and types pass through
our waters, transporting cargo and people – many of them under the skillful
guidance of a pilot from DanPilot. Yearly, more than 20.000 vessels employ
our services, ensuring the safety of the vessel, crew and cargo as well as the

delicate marine environment.

Subject to dense traffic, strong currents, low and variable draughts as well
as crossing ferries, leisure crafts, and harsh weather conditions with limited
sight frequently – the Great Belt poses a real challenge to even the most
skilled Master Mariner, and pilotage services have subsequently been needed
in our waters for more than 450 years. As a result of these factors, the IMO
has issued an official IMO Recommendation outlining that as a minimum
any vessel with a draft of 11,0 meters or more should make use of a pilot
for the full transit through the official transit routes (SN.1/Circular.263 of
23.10.2007 section 1.9 and 1.14).

In addition to the customary adherence to the IMO Recommendation,

thousands of vessels with less draft take pilot during their voyage each year,
due to the numerous perils underway, making the use of pilot when navigating
the Great Belt customary.
