Today, you are going to read a story about two boys who love
vegetables. Find out how they got them fresh and tasty.

Let’s Go Green
Miguel and Manuel are twins. They do many things in
common. They both like vegetables. They have a
vegetable garden. Miguel’s garden has tomato plants,
eggplants, okra and carrots. While Manuel’s garden has
ampalayas, patolas, squashes and string beans. They
counted their plants as they watered them.
“There are twenty tomato plants, thirty okra, twenty-
five eggplants and ten carrots,” Miguel counted cheerfully.
“I have twenty string beans, fifteen ampalayas,
twenty five patolas and fifteen squashes!” Manuel
answered happily. “Mother and Father will be very happy
to see our growing garden, Miguel,” added Manuel.
That night, they decided to make an inventory of their
plants in the garden to show it to their parents.
Miguel drew a pictograph.

has in his garden? Was his graph informative?
LEARNINGPOINTS
Can you interpret Miguel’s pictograph and Manuel’s table?
A Pictograph is a graphic symbol or picture representing
things or ideas. It uses a legend as an explanation of the symbol or
picture used.
Tables and Graphs are visual representations. They are
used to organize information to show patterns and relationships. A
Graph shows this information by representing it as a shape like
bars, circles, and lines. Researchers and scientists often use tables
and graphs to report findings from their research.
Pictographs, graphs and tables contain important information
for effective decision making, drawing conclusions and influencing
others.
How to interpret pictographs, graphs and tables?
1. Read the Title.
-The title gives us an idea what the graph/table is about.
2. Use the Legend.
-The Legend, tells the number or idea that each picture
represents.
3. Understand the data presented.
Example 1: Interpreting Pictograph
1. What
is this pictograph about?
Miguel’s Vegetable Garden
2. What is meant by the Legend?
Each vegetable represents 5.
3. What are the vegetables planted in Miguel’s garden?
Tomatoes, Okras, Eggplants and Carrots
4. How many tomato plants are there?

represents five, so 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 =
20 or 5 x 4= 20.
5. Looking carefully at the pictograph, which vegetable in
Miguel’s garden planted the most? If you answered OKRAS,
you are right! How many okras are there? Let us count it by
five, 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 30
6. Which vegetable is least in number?
The carrots with only 10
