Technology  Overview:
Passive  Op<cal  Network  Landscape
Technology  Overview:
Passive  Op<cal  Networks
• Passive  Op;cal  Network  (PON)  =  Set  of  op;cal  fibre  access  technologies
standardized  by  ITU-‐T  &  IEEE,  (originally  created  by  the  Full  Service  Access
Network  (FSAN)  group):
– OLT  is  the  interface  between  PON  and  the  CORE  network  at  the  service
provider’s  central  office
– ONT/ONU  is  located  near  end  users.  It  provides  the  service  interface  for  the
end  users
– ODN  connects  the  OLT  at  the  central  office  to  the  customer  ONT/ONU  devices
=  fibres  &  spliXers
– “ONT”  is  an  ITU-‐T  term  to  describe  a  single-‐tenant  ONU
GPON  Opera<on
• Downstream

• Upstream
Mo<va<ons  for  PON  deployment
• Fiber  saving  between  spliXer  and  CO/POP
– Relevant  in  scenarios  where  exis;ng  cables  or  ducts  need  to  be  reused
towards  the  spliXer,  or  where  fiber  deployment  is  restricted  (e.g.,  aerial
cabling)
– Less  relevant  for  Greenfield  scenarios  (marginal  cost  of  fiber  compared  to
digging,  splicing,  ...
• Analog  video  overlay  for  exis;ng  broadcast  services
– emulates  cable  TV  distribu;on  plant  on  a  separate  downstream  wavelength  –
delaying  introduc;on  of  IPTV
– requires  equivalent  of  cable  headend  at  each  OLT
• Port  saving  in  the  CO/POP
– No  need  to  terminate  thousands  of  fibers  on  switch  ports  -‐  PON  can  reduce
this  by  1...2  orders  of  magnitude  compared  to  P2P
– port  costs  on  a  per-‐customer  base,  however,  are  roughly  equivalent
• No  deployment  of  ac;ve  equipment  in  the  outside  plant
– in  Europe  &  ME  typically  loops  are  sufficiently  short  so  that  also  for  P2P
– no  need  to  put  ac;ve  equipment  into  the  outside  plant,  unless  the  fiber  saving
argument  becomes  relevant
