Calculations for Part A

a. Show the calculation of moles of CO2 gas released for all three trials (step #5). Include your
calculation of the molar mass of CO2. Use correct significant digits for all of your calculations.

b. Show the calculation of moles of NaHCO3 used for all three trials (step #7). Include your
calculation of the molar mass of NaHCO3. Use correct significant digits for all of your calculations.

Conclusion to Part A: Compare the average number of moles of CO2 released and NaHCO3 reacted
(step #6 and step #8 in the table above). The ratio of moles should be approximately 1:1. What is the
calculated ratio that you got in the lab? See helpful tip below.

Helpful tip: While the ratio of the stoichiometric coefficients in the balanced equations are 1:1 the
reaction does not start with an entire mole of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) or produce an entire
mole of CO2. You will be comparing two very small numbers to each other to determine the ratio.
For example, if the number of moles were 0.045 for CO2 and 0.046 for NaHCO3 you can determine
the ratio by dividing one number by the other.

0.045/0.046 = 0.98 and the ratio would be 1:0.98

Calculations for Part B
a. Show the calculation of moles of CO2 for both trials (step #5). Include your calculation of the
molar mass of CO2. Use correct significant digits for all of your calculations.

b. Show the calculation of mass of NaHCO3 for both trials (Step #7) Include your calculation of the
molar mass of NaHCO3. Use correct significant digits for all of your calculations.

c. Show the calculation for the average mass of NaHCO3 for the two trials tablets (step #8). Use
correct significant digits for all of your calculations.

Using the actual mass of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) in one tablet of Alka-Seltzer you recorded
from the package (step #1) and your experimental value for the average mass of NaHCO3, (step
#8) calculate the percent error. Show your work. Record this value in your data table (step #9)
