[ ]
DECILES are those values that divide the total frequency into 10 equal parts. The kth decile
denoted by Dk is computed as follows:

kn
−<C f b
𝐷𝑘 = 𝐿𝐵 + 𝒊
10
f Dk

LB → lower class boundary of the 𝐷𝑘 class

Where:

n → total frequency

𝐷𝑘 class
<cfb → cumulative frequency of the class below the

𝒇
𝑫𝒌 → frequency of the
𝐷𝑘 class
𝒊 → size of the class interval
k → nth decile, where n = 1, 2, 3…9

 𝐷1 is the score which has 10% of the scores below it and 90% above it.
 𝐷2 is the score which has 20% of the scores below it and 80% above it.
 𝐷3 is the score which has 30% of the scores below it and 70% above it.
.
.

𝐷9 is the score which has 90% of the scores below it and 10% above it.
.

Example # 1
Calculate the 7th decile of the Mathematics exam scores of 50 students of grade 10-Diligence.

Scores Frequency

41-45 7

36-40 11

31-35 10

26-30 8

21-25 5

Solution:

i=5 N=50

𝐷7 class:
7 N 7(50)

= 35

[ ]
This means that we need to find the class interval where the 35th score is
contained. The 𝐷7 class is the class interval 36-40.

𝐷7 = 35.5 + (0.73) 5

𝐷7 = 39.14

Interpretation: therefore, the 70% of the grade 10-diligence got a score less than
or equal to 39.14

Example # 2
Find the 5th decile of a covid cases per day in Quezon City.

Interpretation: therefore, the 50% of covid cases per day is less than or equal to

E. Finding practical applications of  In real life deciles are used in finance and economics to divide data into sets for
concepts and skills in daily living the purpose of analysis. For example, the data set of mutual fund portfolio or the
data set of income-tax return filers can be divided for analysing the top 10 per
cent and so on. Deciles as statistical tools can be used for a variety of purposes
and in a variety of industries or segments. The government, too, can use the data
to frame welfare policies, tax policies, and so on.
