Plagiarism
Plagiarism is a particular form of cheating. Plagiarism must be avoided at all costs and students who break the rules,
however innocently, may be penalised. It is your responsibility to ensure that you understand correct referencing
practices. As a university level student, you are expected to use appropriate references throughout and keep
carefully detailed notes of all your sources of materialsfor material you have used in your work, including any
material downloaded from the Internet. Please consult the relevant unit lecturer or your course tutor if you need
any further advice.

Student Declaration

Student declaration

I certify that the assignment submission is entirely my own work and I fully understand the consequences of
plagiarism. I understand that making a false declaration is a form of malpractice.

Unit Learning Outcomes:

LO3 Describe the basis of semiconductor action, and its application to simple electronic devices.
LO4 Explain the difference between digital and analogue electronics, describing simple applications of
each.

Assignment Brief and Guidance:

Task 1
Semiconductor devices form the foundation of modern electronics, playing a pivotal role in the transformation
and control of electrical signals. These devices, typically made from semiconducting materials such as silicon,
exhibit the unique ability to modulate the flow of electrical current. The most fundamental semiconductor
device is the diode, allowing current to flow in one direction. Transistors, another essential component,
amplify or switch electronic signals, forming the building blocks of digital circuits. Integrated circuits, which
house multiple semiconductor devices on a single chip, have revolutionized electronics by enabling the
creation of powerful, compact, and energy-efficient devices.

Answer the following questions based on the details you have learnt on semiconductor devices.
1. What is a p-n junction & how does it form in a semiconductor material?
2. Explain the concept of majority and minority carriers in a p-n junction.
3. Describe the behaviour of a p-n junction under forward bias and reverse bias conditions.
4. How does the depletion region change with the application of external voltage in a p-n junction?
5. Prepare a report on BJTs & FETs
For the report, you must include the following separately for both BJT & FET;
- Basic Operation
- Characteristic Curves (Ex: For BJT Ib vs VBE & IC vs VCE, show the regions Cut-off, Saturation &
Active in the diagram)
- Different Applications
6. Design an amplifier circuit with BJT & simulate the circuit using proteus software.
Task 2
1. Define digital & analog signals and explain their fundamental differences.
2. Discuss how does the information representation differ between digital & analog systems.
3. Explain situations where digital electronics offer advantages over analog electronics, considering
factors like precision and flexibility.
Task 3
Operational amplifiers are one of the most useful building blocks for analog electronic circuit design. They
are easy to use and can provide some near perfect analog circuits. The Op-amp is a high perfoming amplifier
circuit block which enables many different electronic amplifier circuits to be designed with the addition of just
a handful of other components.
1. Give brief descriptions on 3 different types of Op-Amp circuits and derive expressions for the gain of
each circuit.
2. Find an expression for the output voltage of the circuit shown in the figure below.
3. Derive an expression for the output voltage Vo of the following circuit in terms of the input voltages V1,
V2 and V3 and the component values.

Task 4
555 Timer is a popular & useful timing device consists of a resistive circuit, comparators, transistors, SR
flip flop & an inverter.
Analyze the internal circuit of the 555 timer & briefly discuss the function of each component.
