Transformer Derating Method
Introduction
Application of transformer:
➢ To Step up and Step down the Voltages
➢ To Convert 3 phase 3 wire system to 3 phase 4 wire system
➢ Isolation Transformer – UPS/Inverter
➢ To Reduce Short Circuit – Lightning Transformer
➢ To Convert Ungrounded System to Grounded System Using Zigzag Transformer
Standards of Transformer IEEE-60076
Transformer Data Sheet
Altitude – It is defined as the measures the height of the transformer for eg – 1000m depends
on the altitude and the derating percentage of transformer is zero
Derating – It is depending on the altitude of the transformer for eg – when the altitude of the
transformer is above 1000m and the derating percentage start increases from the transformer
height basically a derating is depending on the ambient temperature also
Altitude Derating
This is a nominal rating of the altitude and derating percentage of transformer
When the altitude is above 1000m the derating percentage is increases 2%
For eg
Altitude is 1100m find the derating percentage?
Nominal Altitude is 1000m
Altitude Derating
1000m 1
1100m 1-2%=0.98
1100 – 1000 = 100
Page 1 of 3
= 100/100 = 1
Derating % = 0.98
= 1 – 0.9800
= 0.02
= 0.02*100
Derating % = 2 %
Derating = Nominal kV – Derating %
= 1000 – 2%
Derating = 980
Temperature Derating
Altitude is 1000m when the ambient temperature is increases above 10℃
Every 1% of 1℃ is calculated
Design Ambient Temperature is 30℃
It is increases above 10 degrees so the ambient temperature is 40℃
Then the temperature derating is increases ambient – Nominal value
= 40 – 30
= 10
Then 1 % of 1℃ is 0.99
= 0.99^10
= 0.9043
= 1 – 0.9043
= 0.09561
= 0.09561 * 100
Derating % = 9.56 or 9.6
Page 2 of 3
= 1000 – 9.6 %
Derating = 904
Now Incase we have increases both altitude above 1000m and ambient temperature raises
above a 30℃
Both Altitude and Temperature derating
For eg,
Altitude = 1100m
Ambient temperature = 40℃
Then we have calculated independently and multiply both altitude and ambient temperature
also,
Derating of Altitude × Derating of ambient temperature × 100
= 0.9800 × 0.9043 × 100
Derating = 88.62
Derating % is 88.62 – 100
Derating % = 11.37 or 11.4
