SOLIDIFICATION EXERCISES
I. Palladium - Silver diagram

1. Plot the shape of the cooling curve T° vs time for the 70 wt% Ag alloy.

2. The 70 wt% alloy is heated to 1200°C.

a. What is the composition (wt% Ag) of each phase present at this
temperature?
b. What is the weight fraction of each phase present at this
temperature?

3. An Pd-Ag alloy with an unknown composition is solidifying. The composition

of its first crystal of solid is 30% Ag.
a. What is the composition (wt% Ag) of the alloy which is solidifying in
these conditions?
b. What is the composition (wt% Ag) of the last drop of the liquid phase
for this alloy?
Code: MME-MAT-EXP14 Microstructure of Materials

II. Copper - Silver diagram

1. Complete the diagram (name of the phases, liquidus, solidus)

2. For an alloy with 50% wt Ag,

a. Plot the shape of its cooling curve T° vs time.
b. Detail the weight fractions and the compositions of each phase at TE
+ ε and TE - ε (TE = temperature of the eutectic equilibrium)

3. At a temperature of 850°C.
a. What is the composition (%wt Ag) of the alloy(s) which contains a
weight fraction of the liquid phase = 0.4?
b. Are there any other alloys with the same liquid phase weight fraction?
Code: MME-MAT-EXP14 Microstructure of Materials

III. Platinium - Silver diagram

1. Complete the diagram (name of the phases, liquidus, solidus).

2. For an alloy with 60% wt Ag,

a. Plot the shape of cooling curve T° vs time.

b. Detail the weight fractions and the compositions of each phase at TP

+ ε and TP - ε (TP = temperature of the peritectic equilibrium).
Code: MME-MAT-EXP14 Microstructure of Materials

IV. Iron - Carbon diagram

1. Detail the three equilibria (kind of equilibrium, phases concerned,

composition of the phases).

2. Detail the formation of the “successive cementite” for a cast iron with 3 wt%
of carbon. At which temperature or temperature domain do they appear?
Calculate the corresponding weight fraction.

3. The micrography of a specific microstructure of steel shows crystals of

cementite and other grains containing pearlite (pearlite = ferrite and
cementite). The fraction of cementite is estimated at 0.2. Could you indicate
the composition (wt% C) of this alloy.
Code: MME-MAT-EXP14 Microstructure of Materials

V. Titanium -Aluminum diagram

1. Fill the graph completely (bi-phased domains, liquidus, solidus…)

2. Highlight the three peritectic points and the peritectoid point.

3. One intermetallic compound can be identified on the right part of the graph.
What is its formula (value of x and y in TixAly)?

Note: The atomic weights are : for Titanium 48 g/mole and for Aluminum 27 g/mole.
