Data, AI and Decision-making Assignment

1. Open Data
Many governments are choosing to release, in machine-readable formats, data sets
currently held by the government (and which do not contain personal information). They
create open data portals where you can find tens of thousands of data sets from that
government. You can find these portals online for various federal, provincial, and
municipal governments, some of which are quite useful. Open Data is not usually
released with a specific purpose in mind. We can't predict what uses people will find for
raw data; the idea is that the public will find uses that move beyond the interests, scope,
or capabilities of governments.

Imagine you would like to take your mini-venture (from assignment #1) and grow it into
a larger, successful business. Identify three open data sets that you expect would be
useful in informing your decision-making. For each, tell us:
- What government provided the data
- What the data is (you may use their description, if you wish, with proper citation)
- Where to find it (direct link)
- What you think you can learn from the data
- What decision do you think it might help you make, and how it will help

For example, if your mini-venture was an umbrella rental service, you might describe one
of your three data sets like this:
Rainfall data – Government of Canada
“This dataset contains adjusted daily rainfall (R) and snowfall (S) data from all
Canadian stations reporting rainfall and snowfall for which we have metadata to
do the adjustments.” (Government of Canada, 2018)
https://open.canada.ca/data/en/dataset/d8616c52-a812-44ad-8754-7bcc0d8de305
I could use this data to learn which areas of Canada get the most rain, and which
areas have the most rainy days. To grow my mini-venture I need to expand
outside of Halifax, and this dataset would help me decide where my next location
should be. (You would not use such a simple example, and will need to provide
substantially more explanation).

Be sure to also include a brief summary of your mini-venture to provide context (this can
be copied from your first assignment).

We expect you will need 250-500 words per data set.

This is an individual assignment and must be completed without consultation with

your mini-venture group.
2. AI (ChatGPT) and Ecological Sustainability

Using ChatGPT write 500 words on ecological sustainability and how it is impacting the
industry your mini-venture is part of. Once you are satisfied with the information that
ChatGPT has created, edit this information and include the data you have identified from
question #1.

Remember that while ChatGPT can be a helpful tool in a paper writing process, it is not a
substitute for your own expertise, critical thinking, and analysis. Therefore, it is important
to use ChatGPT in conjunction with your own knowledge and skills to ensure a high-
quality paper. Ideally, rewriting the essay in your own words would be best, although
tweaking ChatGPT’s response is also acceptable. At this stage, it is definitely important
to proofread the essay and double check any facts with other sources to mitigate against
ChatGPT’s accuracy limitation and avoid academic integrity/plagiarism. Remember:
ChatGPT will fabricate ‘facts’ and create fake sources, so it is your responsibility to
check what it produces. Do not use ChatGPT as a credible source. Find other ways to
justify your information.

Submission: Submit a copy of your prompts and ChatGPT responses as a word file,
PDF, or appendix. Failure to include this information will result in a grade of 0.
Links/URL’s are NOT acceptable. AND submit your final 500 word paper.
3. Reflection on using ChatGPT

Students sometimes lose sight of the fact that critical thinking, research, and writing skills
are skills for effective and informed communication, wherever they are expressed. Write
a 500-1000 word reflection on how you used ChatGPT for Question #2. Questions you
might consider and discuss include:
1. What kind of errors did ChatGPT make, and what did you have to do to find
and correct them?
2. To what extent was ChatGPT useful in answering the questions raised in part
2 of the assignment
3. For what kind of tasks do you think ChatGPT might be useful in future, and
for what kind of tasks is it NOT useful?
Submission
All assignments are to be completed individually. Submit a single file in PDF format. Assignments
must be titled: LastName_FirstName_AssignmentName. Example: Smith_Jill_DataAI.

Assessment Criteria: Assessment is based on your understanding of course material and ability to apply it
to these scenarios.

Faculty of Management clarification on plagiarism versus collaboration:

There are many forms of plagiarism, for instance, copying on exams and assignments. There is a
clear line between group work on assignments when explicitly authorised by the professor and
copying solutions from others. It is permissible to work on assignments with your friends but only
when the professor gives you permission in the specific context of the assignment. University rules
clearly stipulate that all assignments should be undertaken individually unless specifically
authorised.

Specific examples of plagiarism include, but are not limited to, the following:
 Copying a computer file from another student, and using it as a template for your own
solution
 Copying text written by another student
 Submitting the work of someone else, including that of a tutor as your own

An example of acceptable collaboration includes the following:

 When authorised by the professor, discussing the issues and underlying factors of a case
with fellow students, and then each of the students writing up their submissions
individually, from start to finish.
