Marine Propulsion systems- Direction

• Recently built ships and those in design suggests that instead of IEP becoming
the dominant configuration, designers are adopting a diverse range of propulsion
options incorporating
•diesels,
•gas turbines, and
•electric motors
in various combinations.

Focus areas in this presentation:

(a)Electrical /Hybrid Propulsion system for Smaller Vessels

(b) Using Energy sources such as batteries for Propulsion

Electric/Hybrid Propulsion- For Smaller Vessels

-Highly compact Design of motors and VFD modules

- Water Cooled
- Typical 300 kW system weighs around 500-700 kgs.
- Easy integration with gear box ( can also be provided as a mono block installation
integrated with Gearbox)
- VFD can directly take battery as a power source
- Motor capable of regeneration- hence can help in reduction of no. of DG’s onboard
- Suitable for Patrol vessels in Hybrid configurations

Conclusion

• New Propulsion system designs shall be developed with a focus on

•Increasing endurance
•Increasing reliability and availability,
• Modular Designs

•- Owing to increased demand for multiple role vessels and demand for adaptability
of vessels in different operational environment, the propulsion systems will not be
restricted to only Electrical Propulsion but a combination of :

• Diesel
• GT
• Electric Motors

•- New propulsion system evolution shall have increased focus on incorporating or

adapting different energy sources.
