UNIT TEST-1 MODULE-3

Dr. Vijay Kumar Ph.D.

Model Question Paper

ENGINEERING CHEMISTRY

UNIT TEST-1

MODULE-3

Time: 1 hr. Max. Marks: 25

Schedule: Date: 15/11/2024; Time: 11-45am to 12:40am

1. What is Single Electrode Potential? Define Standard Electrode Potential? Is it possible to

determine the absolute electrode potential of a single electrode? How electrode potential
of single electrode can be measured?
2. What is a reference electrode? Explain the construction and operation of a Standard
Reference Electrode. Also, mention two applications of a reference electrode.
3. Discuss the construction, working of Electrolyte Concentration Cell. Derive the Nernst
equation for electrolyte Concentration cell?
4. Write the cell representation and calculate the EMF of the Conc. Cell at 25 ℃ consisting of
two Zn electrodes immersed in solution of 0.1M and 0.01M ZnSO4 solution connected
internally by salt bridge.
5. The EMF of the given Conc. Cell at 298 K is found to be 0.074 V. Find the value of (𝒙) in
the given Conc. Cell. 𝐀𝐠(𝐬)/𝐀𝐠𝐍𝐎𝟑 (𝟎.𝟎𝟎𝟖𝟑 𝐌)//𝐀𝐠𝐍𝐎𝟑 (𝒙 𝐌)/𝐀𝐠(𝐬)
6. What is an Ion Selective Electrode (ISE)? Provide an example of an Ion Selective
Electrode. Explain the construction and operation of a glass electrode, and describe how
the pH of a solution can be measured using a glass electrode in combination with a Standard
Calomel Electrode (SCE).
7. State the working principle of the glass electrode. How can it be explained that the
boundary potential of the glass membrane is dependent on the pH of the solution?
8. Explain the principle and instrumentation of conductometry. How is it applied in the
determination of a weak acid?
9. What is corrosion, and why do metals undergo corrosion? What is the chemical
composition of the flaky material that forms when iron and copper are exposed
to air and water over time?
10. Explain the Electrochemical theory of corrosion (Wet corrosion)? How the formation of
corrosion product occurs?
11. What are the types of wet corrosion? Give an example. Define and discuss the Differential
metal corrosion [Galvanic corrosion]? List some of the corrosion controlling steps?
12. What is anodic metal coating, also known as galvanizing or hot-dipping? What steps are
involved in the galvanization of an iron bar?
13. What is Cathodic Protection? How cathodic protection achieved? Explain how Sacrificial
method is used for corrosion control of a steel?
UNIT TEST-1 MODULE-3
Dr. Vijay Kumar Ph.D.

14. What is corrosion penetration Rate (CPR)? How CPR is expressed? What is the formula
used to calculate CRP. What is the value of K when the surface area of test specimen is in
inch2 and cm2.
15. A brass sheet of area 400 inch2 is exposed to air near the ocean. After two years it was
found to experience a weight loss of 375 g due to corrosion. If the density of brass is
8.73g/cm3. Calculate the CPR in mpy and mmpy?

The Unit tests provide actual feedback to both students and teachers about how well the course is
understood and also help to identify strengths and areas for improvement. Hence for continuous
improvement attending UNIT TEST is made mandatory.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

1. Attending a unit test is mandatory for all students.

2. If any student fails to attend any one-unit test then the assignment marks will be considered
as ZERO.

* Students miss out on unit tests with valid reasons and prior permission from the subject teacher
will be considered, but such students should complete missed unit tests before the next unit test.
