Topik yang saya pilih untuk essay ini adalah "B. GDP is not perfectly suited for country to country
comparisons. Do you agree or disagree to the statement?". Berikut ini essay-nya yang terdiri atas 3
bagian:
GDP (Gross Domestic Product) has long been regarded as a key indicator of a country's economic
performance and development.
However, it is important to recognize that GDP has its limitations when it comes to
comparing countries. In this essay, I will argue that GDP is not perfectly suited for country-to-
country comparisons due to its narrow focus on economic output, exclusion of important factors,
and inability to capture overall well-being and quality of life.
One of the main limitations of GDP is its exclusive emphasis on economic output and
monetary transactions. GDP measures the total value of goods and services produced within a
country's borders, but it fails to consider non-market activities such as unpaid household work,
volunteerism, and the informal sector. This narrow focus neglects significant contributions to a
country's economy and overlooks the reality of many people's lives. Therefore, solely relying on
GDP to compare countries can lead to a distorted perception of their economic conditions.
GDP does not account for important aspects that determine the overall well- being of a
nation. Factors such as income distribution, social inequality, and access to essential services like
education and healthcare are crucial indicators of a country's development. High GDP alone does
not guarantee a fair and equitable society or a high standard of living for all citizens. For instance, a
country with a high GDP may still experience high levels of poverty, unequal wealth distribution,
and inadequate social support systems.
Therefore, using GDP as the sole benchmark for country-to-country comparisons fails to
provide a comprehensive understanding of a nation's progress and the quality of life of its people.
While GDP serves as an important economic indicator, it should not be relied upon as the
sole measure for country-to- country comparisons. Its narrow focus on economic output, exclusion
of non-market activities, and failure to capture overall well-being and quality of life limit its
effectiveness. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of a country's development, it is crucial
to consider additional factors such as social inequality, access to essential services, and
environmental sustainability. By adopting a more holistic approach, policymakers and analysts can
make better-informed decisions and create policies that prioritize the well-being and sustainable
development of nations.
