DATA TRANSMISSION
Data transmission is the transfer of data over a medium or channel
from one point to one or more points

Channels can be wire, cable, optical fibers or wireless.

There are two category of data transmission analog and digital.

Analog information is transmitted as a continuously varying signal.

Digital data is transmitted either as a sequence of pulses, called

baseband transmission.
DATA TRANSMISSION
Data Transmission Media
- All data transmission systems in their most basic form have a
data source (sending device) at one end a receiving device at the
other.

- Two device connected by transmission medium, which can be

wire, coaxial cable, twisted pair cable, optical fiber cable or
space (wireless).
DATA TRANSMISSION

Wire Connections
- A simplest connection between sending and receiving devices is
a wire

- This type of connection is typically limited to internal data

transmission over very short distance within the same system.

- Examples such as computer and/or peripherals.

- Data buses or conductive traces connect to another.

Coaxial Cable
- Coaxial cable (coax) consists of a center conductor within an
insulating dielectric material.

- A copper braided or foil shield surrounds the dielectric to

protect the conductor against electromagnetic interface (EMI).

- Coax is used in data transmission application with data rates up

to 1GHz.
- TV and internet connections are two common connection.

Twisted Pair Cable

- Unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable is used extensively for

indoor telephone application as well as some outdoor uses.

- It is also used in many application in computer networks and

video application, such as security cameras, and also in USB
(universal serial bus) cable.

- UTP is color-coded according to a standard 25-pair color code.

Frequency such as audio and other signal up to 1 MHz.

UTP cables use standard RJ-45 connector

Optical Fiber Cable
- An optical fiber can be as small as a human hair.

- Fiber optics uses lights transmitted through optical fibers.

- Advantages include faster data rates, higher signal capacity more

signals at a time and better over longer distances.

- The main disadvantages of fiber optics is the cost, which is

higher than of coax, UTP, and STP.

Optical Fiber Cable
- Optical fiber is commonly used a medium for
telecommunication and networking.

- Data rates from 10 GHz to 40 GHz are common. Rates over 100
GHz are used.

- When light is introduced at one end of an optical fiber called the

core, it bounces along until it emerges from the other end.
- The fiber is made of pure, plastic, or other material is
surrounded by highly reflective cladding act as a mirror called
total internal reflection.

Modes of Data Transmission
- Data transmission over a communication channel can be
configured in several ways.

- A communication channel is the pathway over which data are

sent and can be in the form of any media

- The method by which data are transmitted can be one bit a time
called serial and several bit at a time called parallel.

- Data either synchronous and asynchronous

Modes of Data Transmission
- Serial and Parallel Data
- Serial data is when data are transmitted one bit at a time in a bit
stream.
- Parallel data transmission when data transmitted several bit at a
time.
- Bits transmitted faster in parallel than serial resulting in higher
data rates.
- Several bit transmitted in parallel on multiples line
simultaneously

Modes of Data Transmission
- Serial and Parallel Data

- Data from computer to a printer are transmitted over a USB,

which is serial.

- Data transmitted over a long distance via derail mode.

- Some cases data is transmitted in parallel over a single channel.
