STATEMENT OF PURPOSE -ADWOA FOSUAA OWUSU
(Master of Science in Sociology)
I write to express my interest in a Master’s Degree Programme in Sociology at the University of
Glasglow for September 2021. I graduated from the University of Ghana in 2015 with a
Bachelor’s degree in Sociology with Philosophy and Classics.
During the final year of my undergraduate study, I contemplated the direction for my life. I have
always been passionate about enrolling in a Master’s programme in any Social Science discipline
to gain in-depth knowledge and understanding of the dynamics and concomitant changes of
human society. I have always had the conviction that a thorough study of society and its
institutions is of paramount importance in solving problems of great magnitude such as poverty,
development, crime, deviance and family disorganization.
My interest in Sociology was sparked off during my undergraduate study where I was required to
employ my sociological lens to views diverse issues. This awakened in me the curiosity to learn
more about sociological influences that affect our daily lives. In an increasingly globalized
world, it is important to have a deep understanding of the social institutions that govern us, and
the cultural underpinnings which shape human actions, behaviours and values. Human life has
been constantly dictated to by the social environment and the intricate web of social relationships
which either unite people or cause society to splinter. A careful analysis of these issues is
indisputably essential to its solution and Sociology offers such unique opportunity for which I
wish to study at a Master’s level.
A Master’s degree in Sociology will help me gain in-depth knowledge of contemporary societal
related issues such as development, globalisation, family, health, deviance and crime. This
course will help me acquire new knowledge, expand my potential within a specific area and
apply critical thinking and analytical skills to systematically integrate knowledge, analyse and
deal with complex issues. The complexity and evolution of social thought and Sociology itself
is intriguing and I am eager to play a vital role in its development. My career goal is to be
lecturer (researcher) and a consultant in social and development related issues. I believe this
unique opportunity will serve as a springboard in my academic and career progression and
launch me to the eventual pursuit of a Doctoral degree. It is my firm belief that my background
and experience would put me in good stead to undertake this programme and equip me with the
requisite tools to make meaningful contribution to my country.
I am applying based on the achievements and the reputation of the university globally, its unique
ambience for learning, course structure and content, teaching methods and practical training and
seasoned faculty. I understand the commitment, grit and resolve a graduate programme calls for
and I believe I am motivated to successfully undertake it. I am positive that this opportunity will
be offered to me to study and acquire knowledge and skills towards societal development.
