o I- interpreting of message builds on, and enhances understanding. In interpreting the
message, it involves consideration of factors such as context of the message.
o E- requires the listener to be open mind on the message they are receiving and not
easily jumping into conclusion. Listener needs to evaluate all the gathered information
before formulating a response.
o R- last is the responding in which should be measured and must demonstrate that one
should understand what is being communicated. The response may include clarification
and reflection.
KINDS OF LISTENER (API)
- This listener does not participate in the communication process. Places the responsibility of
successful communication to the speaker
- This kind of listener is fully participating in the communication process. This listener is
attentively listening, providing feedback, and also eager to comprehend and remember the
communication
- Intends to pay attention, but allow their minds to wander. Listener that are easily distracted by
the noise and other disruption.
TYPES OF LISTENING
- Types of listening that understands the message that is being communicated, and also
fundamental to all listening types.
- Listening that is early developed- eve before birth. It is described as the basic form of listening
that does not need an understanding, merely distinguishing the sounds. Example: sound of
mother is different from the father.
- Type of listening wherein we are learning. We normally don’t actively participate in
communication but we usually just listen and gather needed information. We don’t critique and
analyze.
- This is a type of listening that engage in communication. Its purpose is to evaluate and analyze
the information. it involves problem solving and even decision making.
- this type of listening is about the enjoyment to what is being heard. For example, listening to
music for relaxation.
- this listening is attempting to understand the emotional context of the speaker- put yourself in
the speaker’s shoes. This listening is deeply connecting with people, involves deeper connection
with regard of the emotion.
- Is a negative type of listening that involves selection process to which information is only
understood and heard. This is biased due to the factors such as preconceptions and biased
perception.
- Type of listening wherein we build friendship or togetherness with other people. A type of
listening that shows that you are trusting the listener and they should trust you too.
