The Physical Self

- this pertains to how you look loke

- concerned with body image, self-concept, self-esteem, and similar facets of physical attractiveness.

Body image – the perception of physical self. Your thoughts and feelings about your body (positive or
negative.)

4 aspects

 Perceptual- is how you see your body, but not always correct due to insecurities or
overconfidence.
 Cognitive- the belief about your physical self. May result to overthinking if left unchecked.
 Affective- how you feel about your body
 Behavioral- what you do as a result of the aforementioned aspects

Healthy body image is characterized by having a realistic perception, feeling good despite what other
says. It’s about accepting what God-given traits and having good attitude towards it. Instilling into our
mind that beauty is cannot be measured by the physical appearance, it is within us. Our self-esteem is
what’s more important, the appreciation and valuation of oneself worth.

Unhealthy body image is characterized by the negative view about oneself because of the physical
appearance. People having unhealthy body image tends to have low-esteem. They are more prone to
negativities, stress, anxiety, and depression, as they merely focus to what’s wrong about them, even
though there’s nothing to be ashamed of.

Impact of Mass Media to the Physical Self

Mass media greatly influences the perception of people to their own bodies. The social media for
instance, it creates beauty standards and body figure to be considered as beauty which affect people’s
perception and self-esteem.
TASK 3.2 Healthy Body Image Activity

“Healthy foods result in a healthy body, sharp minds, good self-esteem, and a warm smile.”

Every person is unique, and therefore we do not compare. It is crucial for each one of us to
appreciate ourselves. The acceptance of what God has given us must start within oneself. We are
uniquely created and special in various ways. The only thing that each one of us can do is learn
how to accept and appreciate ourselves. The positivity should come out first from our mouths
before we expect others to do so. We should instill into our minds that beauty cannot be
measured by our physical appearance; it is within ourselves, and that’s what is important.

Acceptance and appreciation need an effort too, and it is about taking time to say positive things
about yourself and surround yourself with your loved ones and those who admire you. Desiring
a healthy body, a healthy image must be for yourself and not for others. The goals and aim
should be for their own benefits, and the rest will follow. Start ourselves with a positive mindset,
together with a healthy and active lifestyle; being healthy not just physically but for our overall
well-being.

Let’s learn to respect each other, build one another’s confidence, and live in a healthy body
image—a happier world.
