2.1 System Components

The XTS-W+ installation comprises the following major components,

• ‘In-Engine’ Sensors
• Terminal Boxes
• Signal Processing Unit(s) (SPU)
• Interface Unit
• PC
• Optional Water In Oil Sensor and Control Box
• Optional Shaft Line Earth Monitor Sensor and Control Box

2.1.1 ‘In Engine’ Sensors

Wear and temperature sensors are mounted on custom made brackets within
the engine. The cables from the sensors pass through glands in the crank case
wall and are wired to terminal boxes on the outside of the engine.

OMMXTS-W00079 Rev 1 – Feb 10

System Overview

2.1.2 Terminal Boxes

Terminal boxes provide a break in the sensor wiring to simplify system
maintenance. They are mounted on the external face of the crank case, using
the threaded cable exit hole. Sprung cage clamps provide the electrical
connection.

2.1.3 Signal Processing Unit (SPU)

From the terminal boxes, the cables are routed outside the engine to a Signal
Processing Unit (SPU) which is mounted at a convenient point on the engine.
The SPU, which is connected to the Interface Unit, processes and then logs all
sensor signals. The PC communicates with the SPU using an RS485 link
(ModBus RTU protocol) to request data.

Note
Each SPU is capable of processing 7 cylinders (14 sensors) and 4
temperature inputs. For engines with more than 7 cylinders, an additional
SPU is required. The two SPUs are termed ‘master’ and ‘slave’. The ‘master’
is connected to the Interface Unit, but an additional cable connects the
‘master’ and ‘slave’ together.

2.1.4 Interface Unit

The Interface Unit is installed in the Engine Control Room and provides an
electrical interface between the SPU and PC, with electrical isolation of the DC
supply to the SPU.

It also provides outputs for integration with the ship’s automation system with
three double pole change over relays to indicate alarm conditions.

2.1.5 PC
A panel mounted PC reads data back from the SPU(s) and logs readings to a
local database. A graphical user interface (GUI) is provided to display live and
historical data for all bearings.

2.1.6 Optional Water In Oil Sensor

Where Water In Oil detection is required, a sensor and associated control box
are connected to the master SPU. The PC shows water activity, water content
and temperature in both live and logged trend formats. It also provides hi and
hi-hi alarming based on set alarm values.

2.1.7 Optional Shaft Line Earth Monitoring

Where Shaft Line Earth Monitoring is required, an optional sensor and control
box are connected to the master SPU.

2.2 System Interconnections

The following two diagrams illustrate the system connections.

2.3 Displays
This section describes the two main displays provided on the PC for the
operation of the system.

• Live Data for Sensors and Cylinders

• Trend Data for Sensors and Cylinders
• Live and Trend Data for Optional Water In Oil

2.3.1 Live Data

All bearing conditions are indicated in real time by a series of bar graphs. Any
indication of wear is shown as bars growing downwards. Accumulation of
material on the bearing surface is shown as growth. The wear, in microns, is
shown by the scale on the left hand side of the screen.

Alarm and Slowdown thresholds are defined for both actual and deviations,
and if exceeded, trigger software warnings and set the appropriate relay
outputs.

The alarm and slowdown levels are shown by the amber and red markers,
respectively, on the right.

System Overview

2.4 XTS-W+ New Features

The XTS-W+ system has the same features from the earlier XTS-W system,
plus some notable enhancements.

2.4.1 MAN Diesel Compliance

The Firmware in the S.P.U. and the software on the P.C. have been modified to
include compliance with the latest MAN Diesel specifications.

2.4.2 Alarm Outputs

The alarm are mechanical relays, giving flexibility for connection, and having
both normally open and normally closed contacts.

2.4.3 Water In Oil and Shaft Line Earth Monitoring

The S.P.U. has been upgraded to include hardware which communicates with
the optional Water in Oil and Shaft Line Earth Monitoring sensors.

2.4.4 24V DC Supply

The system is powered from a 24V DC supply.

2.4.5 + and – Wear

Both positive and negative wear are now show. This enables the system to
display any growth detected on the bearings.

2.4.6 Cylinder Average

It has been found that wear detected on one side of a cylinder can be equal
and opposite to the wear detected on the other side of the same cylinder. By
displaying sensors pairs averaged as cylinders, this ‘tilt’ is removed, and only
true wear is shown.

2.4.7 Automated Calibration

The calibration procedure has been greatly enhanced by automating it.
Compliance with MAN Diesel specifications requires that the engine is run at
various speeds, and the system advises what to do, and when.

2.4.8 Active Alarm List

All alarm events are displayed. Each items flashes until the event is
acknowledged, and automatically disappears from the list when the reason for
the alarm has cleared.

3.1 Wear Sensors

The Wear (Proximity) Sensors, which are fitted to sensor brackets, consist of
an M18 x 1.0 mm threaded body, with a flat sensing surface at one end and an
electrical connector at the other end.

Two sensors are installed per cylinder, one each side of the guide shoe, to
measure its position at Bottom Dead Centre (BDC). The sensor brackets are
normally bolted to the linear guide surface, on the manoeuvre side of the
engine, between adjacent guide shoes. Typically, two wear sensors are
mounted per bracket, providing measurement for adjacent cylinders. Where
there is no adjacent cylinder i.e. at the ends of the engine or at a timing chain
box, only one wear sensor is fitted, but with the addition of a temperature
sensor.

During installation, the wear sensors must be adjusted to give a 3.0mm gap
with reference to the bottom face of the guide shoe at BDC.

Cables from each sensor are glanded through the engine wall, via the shortest
practical route, and wired to terminal boxes mounted on the outside of the
engine.

OMMXTS-W00079 Rev 1 – Feb 10

16

System Components

3.2 Temperature Sensors

The temperature sensors consist of an M4 x 10mm stud, housing a sealed

sensing element.

A typical installation will include 2 or 4 temperature sensors depending upon

the engine type and size.

Note
Both the Proximity Sensors and the Temperature Sensors are fitted to
brackets which are custom designed to fit individual engines.
The temperature sensors are provided with an in-line plug.

Example Bracket and Sensor Installation

The following picture shows an example installation of a bracket and sensors.

Rev 1 – Feb 10 OMMXTS-W00079

17

System Components

3.3 Terminal Box

The Terminal Box provides a cable break between internal and external engine
wiring to simplify maintenance. Sensor cables, from each bracket, are routed,
via the shortest practical route, through a threaded hole in the engine wall. A
Terminal Box is secured to the external face of the engine using an M20 x 1.5
cable gland screwed in to the threaded exit hole. Internal sensor cables pass
through a gland, screwed in to the hole on the inside of the engine, to prevent
any oil leakage.

One Terminal Box is installed for each sensor bracket.

Cables then run on the outside of the engine between the terminal boxes and
the SPU(s).

OMMXTS-W00079 Rev 1 – Feb 10

18

System Components

3.4 Signal Processing Unit

The SPU is powered directly from the Interface Unit, which isolates this supply
from the incoming 24V DC supply. It processes and logs the sensor data to
non-volatile memory and an SD card. Live and historical data can be read from
the SPU using the RS485 link (ModBus RTU).

The sensors are connected from the engine mounted terminal boxes and
routed to the SPU. The SPU should be mounted with the cable glands facing
down.

The SPU can accept up to 14 Wear Sensor inputs, and 4 Temperature Sensor
inputs, as well as one Water In Oil and one Shaft Line Earth Monitor. For
engines with more than 7 cylinders, a second ‘slave’ SPU is installed. The
sensor connections are then distributed between the two SPUs. A multi-core
cable connects the ‘master’ and ‘slave’ SPUs together. The ‘master’ SPU is
connected back to the Interface Unit by a multi-core cable.

Rev 1 – Feb 10 OMMXTS-W00079

19

System Components

3.5 Interface Unit

The Interface Unit houses a circuit board. On the board is a 24V DC/DC
converter with an isolated output, which provides power to the SPU(s). The PC
is also powered from the circuit board, via fuses, but is not isolated from the
incoming 24V supply.

Also incorporated on the circuit board are the three relays which provide the
alarm outputs to the AMS. All wiring to the circuit board is by means of plug
and socket connectors with spring loaded terminals.

Relay Outputs
The ‘master’ SPU includes three isolated outputs which connect to the
Interface Box. These then drive double pole change over contact relays.

The three outputs are as follows:

Healthy: The “Healthy” relay output is normally energised, and de-energises

when a hardware fault is detected.

Alarm: The “Alarm” relay output is normally energised, and de-energises

when a set-point level is exceeded.

Slowdown: The “Slowdown” relay output is normally de-energised, and

energises when a high set-point level is exceeded.

The Slowdown relay is considered to be critical, and thus needs to be reliable,

both in terms of not switching on to give false indication, and always switching
on when it should. The relay is configured to be de-energised when healthy,
so that a failure in the power supply will not cause it to change state.

OMMXTS-W00079 Rev 1 – Feb 10

20

System Components

Three strategies are used to guard against problems when the relay is in its
normal de-energised state:

• Optional resistors can be placed across the normally open contacts, so that an
alarm system can send a small current through the wires and detect the
presence of these resistors, confirming the integrity of the wiring.
• The resistance of the relay coil is monitored, to ensure that it is present. Failure
results in the Healthy relay de-energising.
• A brief repetitive pulse is sent from the SPU, which is too short for the relay to
react to. This pulse is detected by the on-board microcontroller, and is used to
verify the integrity of the connection between the SPU and the Interface board.
Failure results in the Healthy relay de-energising.

The following lists the various situations which will cause each relay to change
from its normal state.

Healthy Relay Triggers

• Wiring failures
o Break in wire between SPU and Interface on Healthy circuit
o Break in wire between SPU and Interface on Slowdown circuit
o Short circuit across wires between SPU and Interface on Slowdown circuit
o Slowdown relay coil not detected
o Loss of comms between SPU and PC
• Others
o SPU Firmware reprogramming

Alarm Relay Triggers

• Wiring failures
o Break in wire between SPU and Interface on Alarm circuit
• Sensor related
o Sensor exceeds Alarm level
o Sensor deviation exceeds Alarm level
o Cylinder exceeds Alarm level
o Cylinder deviation exceeds Alarm level
o Sensor failure
o Water In Oil activity Alarm level (Hi or Hi Hi) exceeded

Slowdown Relay Triggers

• Sensor related
o Sensor exceeds Slowdown level
o Sensor deviation exceeds Slowdown level
o Cylinder exceeds Slowdown level
o Cylinder deviation exceeds Slowdown level

The Interface Unit is designed to be mounted in close proximity to the PC, in

the ship’s control room.

Rev 1 – Feb 10 OMMXTS-W00079

21

System Components

3.6 PC

A touch screen, panel mounted, PC provides a graphical user interface (GUI) to

display live and historical data on all bearing conditions.

All connections to the PC are via the Interface Unit.

The PC is designed for panel mounting at a convenient viewing angle. It should

be mounted in the engine control room, or similar, taking in to account the
environmental specification. A desk mounting bracket is supplied.
