Safety is important to everyone and it is your responsibility to maintain a safe
working place.
For you as machine operator to be safe, your machine must be in good working
condition.
Steps to follow to set up your machine;
a) Uncover the machine
b) Clean the machine, Ensure the entire machine is clean; all the moving parts
must be free from dust. Ensure there is no oil leakage
c) Thread the machine
d) Switch on the machine
e) Wind and place the bobbin
f) Check the tension setting
g) Check to ensure the stitches per inch has been set correctly.
h) Test the machine on rough fabric cut piece.
i) Ensure all the need guards are well fixed.
In case of any problem, inform your mechanic and supervisor immediately.
Observe the following while stitching;
Needles are sharp. Keep fingers away.
a) Check your Needle daily before use, if it has abnormal shape report. Don’t
sew with a bent or broken Needle.
b) When sewing, fingers should be placed on either side of the Needle/presser
foot NOT directly in front of the Needle/foot.
c) Keep your feet off the treadle when you are setting or threading the needle.
d) Make sure you’re using the correct needle for the fabric you’re sewing. A
needle that isn’t the right size or thickness for the job could end up breaking.
e) Do not pull your chair forward or toward while operating the machine.
f) Always keep your head above the table.
g) Pay attention to the way your sewing machine sounds. If it starts making
strange noises, or seems louder than usual, it might be time to have it
checked by a pro.
h) Make sure there’s enough light. Using a sewing machine in poor lighting can
lead to mishaps.
i) When sewing, let the Machine move the fabric, don’t force the fabric through
the machine.

Avoid sewing over pins:
If you end up doing this, you make break your needle, your pins will get bent and
you will most likely botch your work.
Avoid distractions:
Concentrate on your work don’t look sideways or perform another duty while
sewing.
Whenever you leave your machine for any reason, put off the machine first before
leaving.
Ensure that you wear shoes when sewing:
Wearing shoes will protect your feet against a variety of potential dangers including
possible electric shock and stepping on one of the many sharp objects associated
with sewing, such as pins and scissors. You could also accidently drop scissors or
other heavy objects on your feet.
Steps to follow before shutting off machine:
1. Turn off the machine
2. Clean the machine
3. Lift the pressure foot, check for oil leakage put a cut piece then lower the
pressure foot.
4. Cover your machine.
