NATIONAL TAIWAN UNIVERSITY THEORY OF STRUCTURES (I)

Department of Civil Engineering Spring 2014

Midterm Examination: April 20 (Thursday), 2016
Time: 10:20-12:20

1. Classify the beam in Fig. 1(a) and the frame in Fig. 1(b) as statically determinate, statically
indeterminate, or unstable. If statically indeterminate, specify the degree of indeterminancy.

(d) MC (moment at C) (12 %)
7. Fig. 7 shows a truss and the influence line of the axial force of member CF for a moving load
(unit: kN) traveling along the bottom cord; note that x=0 at A and x=36 m at E.
(a) Determine the maximum tensile force developed in member CF due to a vehicle moving
along the bottom chord as shown. Express the answer in terms of the value a. (8%)
(b) What is the maximum compressive force in terms of the value a due to a moving uniformly
distributed (live) load wL=20 kN/m that can be placed along any part of the bottom chord ?

8. Consider the building frame subjected to lateral loads as shown in Fig. 8. Assume the inflection
point of each member is located at its midpoint except the columns of the first story. Apply the
cantilever method to analyze the frame and then plot the moment diagram on the frame. Please
plot the moment diagram for the beams in one figure and that for the columns in another figure.
