Recovery of a Person from within a MEWP.

If the machine is at high level it should be brought down to ground level by a competent person
using the ground controls. Different MEWP’s may have different controls. All operatives should be
instructed on how each set of ground controls differ.

Pictures of different controls will be found below and updated if alternative machines are used.

In the event of ground control failure an additional MEWP will be taken to the scene to aid in rescue.
Alternatively the Crane man basket can be used.

Were ever possible the gates from the stranded and rescue mewp should be brought together. If this
is not possible due to gates being side on the Rescue MEWP should push the extending deck out to
meet the stranded MEWP. In all cases a safety harness attached to a secure anchorage point
within the platform should be worn at all times by all parties during rescue.

In the event that a person needs assistance within the machine platform, a competent first aider to
use a safe means of access to the MEWP as stated above and enter the machine platform, assess the
situation and take appropriate action.

If the casualty can be moved, they can give appropriate first aid and lower machine to ground level.
The casualty can then be moved or the emergency services contacted.

Below are examples of MEWPS insert details / sheets of correct platforms / Mewps to be used
