ENERGY CONCEPTS:

1. What does energy efficiency measure?

➢ Energy efficiency is the effectiveness of converting energy into useful work or services with respect to the
input. In most cases, it is a ratio of useful energy output to the total energy input.

2. What is the relationship between energy conservation and energy efficiency?

➢ Energy conservation involves the strategies that minimize energy consumed such as, using less energy
for the same service, while energy efficiency pertains to using different technologies or practices to
accomplish the same functions using less energy. The two aim at cutting down energy use but focuses on
different aspects.

3. What are some disadvantages of energy efficiency?

➢ Initial Costs: Upfront investment for efficient technologies can be high.

➢ Rebound Effect: It is possible that increased efficiency may lead to higher consumption if the more
efficient product is used more.
➢ Limited Adoption: Not every technology and practice is applicable or practical in each situation.

4. What are some pros and cons of energy efficiency?

Advantages:
➢ Lowers energy expenditure.
➢ Reduces carbon footprints.
➢ Improves comfort and productivity.
Disadvantages:
➢ Low Return Rate for Upfront Costs. Expensive To Retrofit Existing Household Appliances.
➢ Risk of obsolete technologies.
➢ Might require changes that some do not find easy.

5. Why is increased energy efficiency beneficial?

➢ The improvement of energy efficiency leads to the lowering of the energy costs incurred, lower negative
effects to the environment and improvement in economical performance achieved as a result of low
consumption of fossil fuels.

6. Why is energy efficiency important?

➢ Energy efficiency plays a significant role in cutting down on energy consumption since it addresses the
issue of global warming, improves energy independence by making countries less reliant on imported
narcotic fuels and helps in promoting economic stability, as well.

7. How can energy efficiency be increased?

➢ Applying Energy Efficient Technologies, engaging appliances and equipment that are energy-efficient.
Improving Insulation, modifying architectural forms in order to reduce the loss of heat.Behavioral
Changes, subjecting persons to more efficient ways of doing things.

8. How does energy efficiency affect the environment?

➢ Better use of energy means less use of fossil fuels and the same leads to less emissions of greenhouse
gases and therefore less pollution which is good for the environment and reduces global warming.

9. What are the biggest energy issues currently faced by humans?

➢ Climate Change, Caused by the consumption of fossil fuels. Energy Security, Dependence on other
nations especially on aggression polities for oil and gas. Access to Energy, Unbalance access between
developed and underdeveloped countries.

10.How is power related to energy?

➢ Power is the time rate at which energy is transferred or converted from one form to another, most often
measured in watts (W). It indicates how fast the work is done or energy is consumed.
11.Thermodynamics is the study of what?

➢ Thermodynamics is the science that deals with heat, work, temperature, and energy how they are related
to one another, and the laws governing these relations in the physical systems.

12.Where does our energy go after we die?

➢ When someone dies, the chemical energy they have stored in their body is eventually released into the
environment through the processes of decomposition and the nutrients that the body held are returned
to the ecosystem.

13.Do living organisms defy the second law of thermodynamics?

➢ This is not to suggest that organisms are exempt from this principle. They consume energy from their
environment, thereby increasing the overall disorder of the system.

14.How does one explain the nature of living things if the second law of thermodynamics is correct?

➢ Organisms use energy from outside in order to create a certain level of organization while enhancing the
disorder of their environment.

15.According to the law of conservation of matter, matter is never created ordestroyed. Yet in a food
pyramid the amount of biomass decreases as we move up through the pyramid, from producers to top level
consumers.Why?

➢ The less biomass at the higher trophic levels is attributable to the energy transfer inefficiencies normally
wattage within 10% range per level caused by the expenditure of energy and dissipation of heat to the
surroundings, which results in lower biomass being available for higher consumers, even though there is
a conservation of mass.
